I worked at Nordson full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Growing at a steady, high rate. Is the global leader in many markets served. Profit sharing when profitable.

    Cons

Top-down corporate management has eroded the morale of many hard-working people. The culture was once very bottom-up, where individuals had considerable input about the work they did. That has reversed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Corporate needs to realize that diverse business groups have unique needs for success and should have significant influence on what works best for their business. Broad dictation of programs, policies and processes often tries to squeeze square pegs into round holes, leading to a frustrating work environment. Find ways to not be so reliant on unpredictable foreign suppliers. Look at the total costs involved with foreign sourcing: lost business due to long lead-times, air shipment of material, quality problems, resources needed for micro-management.

I worked at Nordson full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

I really can't think of too many pros that would truly mean anything. If someone says that the people are great, then they just can't think of anything else. I could say people, but you could say that about so many companies. Management is good at keeping performance in line with expectations for financials.

    Cons

Like any other traditional or larger corporation, bureaucracy and politics abound. Lots of wasted effort and energy. Hard work seems more appreciated than smart work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your employees. It's not enough to want to be innovative and talk about it. Much more needs to be done. Some decisions seemed very short sighted or motivated purely by cost.

  6. Good Company, uneven managers, company highly subject to economic fluctuations.

    I worked at Nordson

    Pros

The company in general is (almost astonishingly) honest about the future in terms of layoffs, business outlook, corporate direction. The hierarchy is pretty "flat" and there aren't expensive offices for managers, officers, etc. In fact the only real office other than a cubicle is the president's and that's shared. Company is subsidiary of Nordson, so it has that corporate buffer (Nordson being a really big company). Benefits ok to good.

    Cons

Company is subject to market / economic fluctuations in a big way. When the 2008-2009 economic downturn happened, companies stopped needing / buying their product. Managers are generally ok, but can be a bit "inbred" in that they either do not know due to lack of experience or care that doing things like springing reviews on people or giving onetime offhand requests while passing in the corridor that turn out later to be super important is not a good idea.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not a lot really. The upper management seems to be pretty competent and probably the only thing they need to do is get some middle-management (those without multiple company management experience in particular) some classes on good people management. There are some single points of potential corporate failure in terms of big intellects that design / research the basis for their product that need to be backed up somehow.

    Pros

The pay is reasonably good but dont think you wont earn it. Company cars, phones, laptops and expenses covered.

    Cons

Heavy travel, no management support until problems escalate then finger pointing begins.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managment is non-existant when needed but also micromanage field personel that know their territories the best. Abrupt changes in all aspects of the business without thought of customer impact.

I have been working at Nordson full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Opportunities available to those willing to sacrifice. Good odds of stable employment for the foreseeable future. Investment in acquisitions provides chances for advancement and growth. The people are friendly and easy to get along with.

    Cons

Typical corporation that puts shareholders in front of customers and employees. Sad, as this company was previously held privately by the founding family that gave back to the community and truly cared about its customers and employees. Work/life balance will be poor unless you fight to keep it balanced.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The majority of your middle management is either terribly incompetent or very selfishly motivated to the point that they report back what you want to hear while they sweep the truth under the rug. You aren't getting the right information to make good decisions. To be fair, the current talent pool at the company for quality managers is very thin and I don't see anyone better who could step in at this level. Need to hire from the outside to shake things up. If you're worried about alienating the workers by not promoting from within, don't be. We all yearn for strong leadership.

We have a good core group of employees, albeit an aging group. Just need to fan the flames and start to build upon our strengths instead of trying to cover for our weaknesses. Speaking of which, how well do we actually know the strengths and weaknesses of our teams?
