I have been working at Nordstrom full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Some great coworkers and great pay. There is an opportunity to make as much as you want.

    Cons

People will return things that they've been wearing for months and say they don't like it anymore and then you lose the commission. When you have a day off you have to worry about how much money you are losing. Horrible management on all levels. They only take care of the employees who sell a lot, even if they are stealing sales from their coworkers. They will not punish people who sell a lot no matter how many complaints they get.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your sales people or they won't stick around for long.

I have been working at Nordstrom part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great support from management. As long as you sell a lot, they don't bother you too much. Good base pay and great pay overall with the commission added. They pay pretty well for a retail job. If you want to move up in the company, they will help you get where you want to go.

    Cons

High turnover of management. Not necessarily just with people leaving but they tend to promote fast, which means that you will have to adjust to a new manager rather frequently.

I worked at Nordstrom full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I had a lot of freedom within the store. I was a valued team member and I felt the love. Nordstrom gave me all of the tools i needed in order to provide superior customer service, which i enjoyed doing.

    Cons

There was an immense amount of negativity among the employees. If you're going to spend so much time in one place, you might as well make it a fun experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management team has practically devoted their lives to being at Nordstrom. They shouldn't expect that of anyone else.

I worked at Nordstrom full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Takes care of their employees, potential to make great money if you're motivated and work at a store with high volume, the customer service provided is excellent

    Cons

Working on commission (on the sales floor) can be stressful, they sometimes promote young, inexperienced associates to management positions which hurts the whole team

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more training for department managers

Former Employee - Sales and Management Intern  in  Austin, TX
Former Employee - Sales and Management Intern in Austin, TX

I worked at Nordstrom as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

-The only positive experience that came from my internship at Nordstrom was how NOT to treat employees and how NOT to run a department.
-The pay can be good during busy times but it can also be bad during slow times, and with more and more people shopping online, slow times were plentiful
-If you're an intern here, expect to learn everything from your fellow salespeople. The managment team is not helpful at all. I met some amazing salespeople.

    Cons

    -Inexperienced DMs & ADMs
-Just because someone sells A LOT doesn't necessarily mean he/she can manage an entire floor of salespeople. This "Nordstrom logic" can be seen throughout the entire company
-I didn't feel welcomed at all by my management team
-Overall it could have been worse, but it should have been far better

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not everyone learns the same. Some people are visual learners, some people are not. Be humble and help "the little guy." Arrogance helps no one.

    Cons

pay isn't bad... but not great either. managers are often inept.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

promote people who know what they're doing and don't just drink the kool-aid.
