Great place to work

Buyer (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at Nordstrom full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThere are lots of opportunities to move up. They promote from within, so if you are mobile and motivated you can go far.

ConsThere isn't a lot of work life balance in merchandising jobs. There wasn't a lot of specific corporate messaging on what a balanced work/life looks like, so it's left up to individual manager interpretation. A lot of balance is dependent on who you work directly for.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook at the scope of jobs by factors beyond volume-- travel, complexity (ie. # of depts, classifications etc..., suppliers, employees) The more you can streamline each role, the more successful people, and in the end, results will be.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

ProsThe discounts at all Nordstrom stores, including Nordstrom rack is very nice. Your experience will depend on your manager and your ability to get a long with others.

Great Company to work for but ,,,,

Sales Associate (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at Nordstrom full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat work environment, minimum supervision, great growth potential, easy to be promoted,

Conslong hours, low income, 100% commission in most departaments, all merchandise returns are effecting each sales person for 1 year, you must be mobile if you want to be promoted to a buyer or store manager, you have to be able to take none-sense from rude customers all day long,

Advice to Senior ManagementThey should give more growth potential for anyone who already have family and mortgage and needs to stay in the local market. This company is great if at least one spouse is making money in the family because you will not. Hours like in all retail are hard to get used to.
