I worked at Nordstrom part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

It was a lot of fun working in Salon Shoes. Great sales people and supportive management.

    Cons

If you aren't a good fit for your department, working at Nordstrom can be miserable. I didn't like my first department but moved at the first opportunity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be open to moving staff to different departments.

I worked at Nordstrom part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Since the shopping experience today is a 24 hour possibility, something has to set you apart from the rest. Customer Service and relationships are key. Nordstrom is king in this area.

    Cons

The personal shoppers tend to do well and have a different set of rules which sometimes conflicts with the sales associates rules on the floor. Since all associates are required to reach goals the difference in the rules tends to create some hostility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat everyone equally. Rules equally across the board.

I worked at Nordstrom part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The discount is good. They really don't expect a lot of intellectual input from you, so if you're a student (like I was) this is a relaxing job to have.

    Cons

There are hundreds of sales associates and only a few managers in each store. Each manager must first be a sales associate. However, the skill sets associated with sales and with management are entirely different. For this reason, the managers are often incredibly dedicated but unfortunately unequipped to do their jobs. They have a tough time managing schedules and personalities- but they do a great job teaching you how to sell better.

Also, my feet hurt ALL THE TIME. I constantly "went to the bathroom."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just take some intellectual input from your employees on occasion to make sure that they don't feel ignored. Also, it was hard to be motivated to sell a lot when the commission structure was against me. There was no motivation to break above the standard hourly pay because if you worked really hard and sold a lot, and then the next day no one came to the store, all that hard work would be down the drain and you'd be paid the same as if you hadn't done anything.

ALSO, LET YOUR EMPLOYEES SIT DOWN FOR GOODNESS SAKE.

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

For a retailer, the benefits are good ... stock purchase plan, 401K with matching up to 2% of salary (though would be better at 5%), profit sharing, health insurance, dental plan, eye care plan, frequently free blood tests, etc. Customers overall are interesting and just plain fantastic!

    Cons

Many of the managers, even for some of the largest departments of the company stores, are young and lack adequate experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote more senior energetic, successful sales people to manage and motivate departments.

    Pros

Great place to make good money. Work with a variety of different people.

    Cons

Every day is blacked out. Too many events to presell for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut the events. It makes them special when they have something to look forward to. Not to get called every two weeks for something different.

I worked at Nordstrom part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Okay starting pay in comparison to the rest of the job market, decent benefits if you work enough hours and work there long enough. Had some great co-workers at times, Loved the employee discount!

    Cons

Depending on which department you work in I think it's very hard to get promoted. I worked in the espresso bar for a few years and was a good employee, never called off and was very reliable. I applied for multiple promotions and other positions that would have been considered promotions and was always rejected. I got the impression my regional manager had something to do with it because that certain person would pick on people they clearly didn't like. I enjoyed my work and also felt I had a lot of good ideas to improve the company and my ideas were often ignored, the regional would tease me and take credit for my ideas later on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please listen to some of the lower employees, regionals aren't always the ones coming up with the good ideas.
