Pros
Promotions happen very quickly compared with other companies if you are willing to move around the country. Commission environment makes it competitive but also keeps you on your feet and motivated to work. There is face to face interaction every day and every day is different.
Cons
It can become very competitive with sales during slow retail times of the year. You will have to work weekends and rarely ever will be off because weekends are the busiest retail days of the week.
Advice to Senior Management
Management could offer more help when needed and also show employees sales techniques.
Pros
The inverted triangle model (ideas flow from floor employees to corporate, rather than the other way around) created a good environment
Cons
Cliquey, everyone you work with wears clothing from the store, sometimes feels like a high school atmosphere on the sales floor
Advice to Senior Management
Make sure department managers promote those who are hard workers, not just people who are cute and that they like you
Pros
The internship allows greater/faster opportunity for growth within the company.
Working during one of the busiest times of the year, during the Anniversary Sale.
Commission!
Love the company culture. Everyone is very friendly, and Store Manager and HR always have an open door if you want to talk about your goals.
20% discount on merchandise!
Throughout the internship, get to meet a variety of interesting people in different positions throughout the company. For example, met the VP of Marketing! Great to hear each person's Nordstrom story, and they were all open to questions.
Cons
Can sometimes "rub elbows" with other employees, since it is commissioned based.
Sometimes worked overtime.
Wish I had more responsibilities with my internship, or was mentored more by my department manager.
Advice to Senior Management
Thank you for such a friendly culture! Loved my internship experience, would just recommend more emphasis on mentorship by managers.
Pros
Paid extensive training.
Convenient hours.
Wonderful Discount.
Customer service oriented.
Cons
lack of cohesion amongst departments.
Advice to Senior Management
encourage team work.
Pros
Wonderful employees, great product, nice store
Cons
store is under construction, a little hard to work there now
Pros
There is so much room to grow. If you make it clear that you want to move up with the company, Nordstrom will not hold you from doing so. The door is always open if you need to talk to any level of management. They only hire from within
Cons
When moving up with Nordstrom your pay does not reflect your job title. In most cases the sales employees have more then Management. Most promotions are actually a lateral move rather then a promotion. You have to move up one slot in title and while taking one step back in pay to move up the ladder. Nordstrom focus so much on the customer that they don't treat the employees the same. You can go to a different retailer and make way more money doing less work.
Advice to Senior Management
Treat your employees better then the customer. The inverted pyramid was designed that way but now you dont take care of your team like you use to before the brothers took over.
Pros
customer service training, wonderful high quality merchandise, great benefits
Cons
long hours during sale times
Pros
Commission is fun if you are competitive. Very upbeat work environment. Great products.
Cons
Only one con...that is favortism from management. Only bugs me if it effects my selling time
Advice to Senior Management
Keep doing a great job. Great place to work.
Pros
Upscale environment & clientel. Good opportunity for advancement
through hard work. Professional atmosphere. Many associates have been there for years,
Good indicator. Reasonable health insurance.
Good discount on products. Several annual events to bolster sales,Anniversary sale,
Half-year sales.
Very good training program, one week.
Opportunity to build your own business. Personal book of customers is used.
A lot of communication to customers is required.
Cons
Long retail hours, sales associates are all on thier game so there is a lot of competion
for sales. Some aggravations between sales people.
Advice to Senior Management
I was very pleased with communication from management .
Pros
Was able to form close bonds with co-workers and they offer a wonderful customer service focus that carries over into any industry.
Cons
Management belittles, has favorites, and is not fair or consistent with many decisions. Store manager let go of top sellers with wonderful attitudes with sole purpose to show that she will "clean house" for no reason. Very upsetting and lowered moral.
