Pros
*Great pay compared to similar companies.
*Good coworkers for the most part.
*I have met some really nice people here.
Cons
*It's retail - irregular hours, standing all day, rude customers, etc.
*Incompetent management in my department/store.
*Favoritism - a lot of it.
*One or two people are allowed to make it a very unpleasant place to work for everyone else.
Advice to Senior Management
Make sure your department managers are leading by example and that HR and management are actually following guidelines. Nobody feels they can go to store HR and that it will be handled correctly so one or two people are allowed to do whatever they want whether it's against company policy or not.
Pros
Flexible Schedule
Great Benefites
Room to transfer and be promoted
Cons
Inconsistent hours
Long nights
Have to be pushy towards customers and constantly told to open accounts for Nordstrstrom credit cards or else you can be written up
Comission sales can get catty and ugly you MUST have to have a strong personality to work this job
Returns can come at anytime of the year and customers can return items that clearly look used or worn
High turnover in some departments
Advice to Senior Management
Learn to take better care of your sales associates on a moral and ethical level because they are the ones making the majority of your sales goals.
Pros
Nice benefits, nice environment to work in, meet a lot of interesting people, good experience overall to learn about sales.
Cons
People that got promoted did so in my opinion unjustly. The salesperson with the worst sales and the worst attitude was the one that was promoted to be manager of another department. I felt like no matter how hard I worked I wasn't going anywhere with the company. Saw serveral people get promoted with bad sales and bad work ethic. Very clicky.
Advice to Senior Management
Teach more. Be more involved in your team and spend more time on the floor helping them develop their skills to make the sales goals for the department. Lots of the managers seem to spend a great deal in the back. I'm not sure what they are doing there.
Pros
Discount
Good benefits
Good place to meet and make friends
Exposure to the fashion industry
Cons
Very low pay
No hourly for sales associates - commission only
Managers playing favorites
Never worked so hard and got paid so little
Very political
Advice to Senior Management
Secure input from sales associates. Keep a closer watch on store managers.
Add hourly wage.
Pros
- 20% discount
- met some nice people (customer were better than most employees)
- i was lucky to have a good manager
Cons
- HR needs to get their stuff together (HR lacked and was very irresponsible towards getting back at employees)
- not inverted pyramid as they put it --- in the end, it's all just a regular pyramid company
- bottom line is make money or you are out.
Advice to Senior Management
1. Do not tell people you are an inverted pyramid company when you really are not.
2. Get your HR team to get their crap straight. (Hire more competent people)
Pros
Meet new people your age.
Good for a first time job.
House Parties
Cons
Management does not lead by example.
A lot of drama between employees and management
Advice to Senior Management
Start listening to the employees and lead by example.
Pros
Nordstrom is a company that cares about the overseas companies they work with. Nordstrom is a large company with solid sales and great growth.
Cons
Senior level management seem out of touch with it's NPG employees. When an issue is raised to senior management, it tends to be viewed as complaining.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your NPG employees. They are experts in their job roles, what resources they need and how long it takes to get the job done and done right.
Pros
reasonable pay and great products to sell. If you work anywhere outside of LA I think the competitiveness would be a bit more bearable
Cons
The other sales associates (females) were competitive and catty. I was given orders by another sales associate to clean up her section and accused of stealing a customer that she didn't work with so that she could get half of my commission.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep a better eye on the sales associates that are seasoned in their department so that there can be a better work environment for everyone.
Pros
Much room for career advancement if you're willing to stick it out, HR dept if there are any issues, employee discount is not too bad
Cons
Commission environment is difficult considering Nordstrom return policy, returns hit the employee for up to a year. Sometimes and often you cannot control the costumers abuse of the return policy
Pros
The pros were the discounts, the great management, and all of the staff that made Nordstrom a wonderful work enviroment.
Cons
The cons were the long hours and low minimum wage plus commision in a bad economy in a low selling department.
Advice to Senior Management
I think there are great managers at nordstrom and there is a great philosophy for the company. I would recommend Nordstrom in a heartbeat.
