Advice to Senior Management
If you work hard, you can make a lot of money and really move up in the company - it is not a place to slack off
Pros
Incredible growth in the technology areas. Expectation to work smart & dedicated to work/life balance (not just lip service). Flexible schedule & most really enjoy coming to work. Consistent recognition for contributors. Focused on growing internal people, but smart enough to know when to go outside for expertise.
Cons
Most benefits are good (love the discount), but personal time off is really lagging. I’m guessing it’s because they come from a retail background. To retain top IT talent, they’ll need to look at this policy.
Pros
Very real. they believe in what they do. Work hard. friendly staff and support. open door to speak to management at anytime. a little cliq-y but that's to be expected.
Cons
Cliqs, commission, return rate affects net pay. lp thinks everyone is a suspicious character.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue to pursue and expect excellence from your team. I loved the feeling of ownership and accountability.
Pros
I enjoyed interacting with the customers . You meet a lot of interesting people and build great relationships while working at Nordstrom. I also enjoyed working on commission because you always know how much you'll make at the end of the period.
Cons
Some of the downsides include the competitive, hostile environment you have to work in because it is commission based. Also, I wish employees had a higher discount since we only have 20% off items while other stores I have worked at ranged from 30-50%off. Some of management expect you to be ultra upbeat everytime you work which is hard to do if it doesn't come naturally. Commission should be the same in every department and it isn't. Their return policy is absurd, takes away from your sales everytime someone returns an item.
Advice to Senior Management
I would advise management to reward their employees more when it is needed and deserved. They should also lay back on some of the rules that they enforce that don't necessarily pertain to the job but only enforced to upkeep a certain look.
Pros
nordstrom is a wonderful working evironment with get health benefits and profit sharing through incredible stores with deep discounts on the latest fashion.
Cons
Its retail and working weekends is mandatory. they do have several times during the year to increase your generous discount and on nordstrom line merchandise
Pros
Friendly and helpful managers. Really work around your schedule for school and allowing to still be able to have a social life.
Cons
Late hours. Don't usually leave if I'm closing till 9:30-10 pm.
Advice to Senior Management
Treat their employees really well. Wish there were more corporate positions in California rather than Seattle:( Excellent Customer Service!
Pros
they treat you with respect
Cons
straight commission, too many associates on the floor at the same time
Advice to Senior Management
there should be an hourly wage + commission and not so many associates on the floor at the same time
Pros
The people are Nordstrom are generally great to work with. The compensation and discount are incentives, as well.
Cons
Retail hours are not fun, especially during holidays and if you have to close the store.
Advice to Senior Management
Better compensation for managers-- many great people refuse promotion because they would be salaried and not be on commission, thus lowering their annual salary.
Pros
There are many good reasons to work at Nordstrom. First- DISCOUNT. Secondly, they are commissioned base sales, so if you can sell, you can make TONS of money.
Cons
Long store hours, especially during sales, and the night before any sale.
Pros
Wonderful and understanding coworkers. They do their best to really encourage all of the departments to achieve sales goals. It is also very easy to get requested days off when put in well in advance.
Cons
I chose to work with the Rack because I was not interested in a pushy sales environmnet. After visiting my local Rack and making many purchases I was pleased with what I saw. It was a lovely uninterrupted shopping experience and when I needed assistance I was able to be helped. The current position I have with the Rack started out wonderfully and then became an environment whose focus I feel has turned to opening rewards. "Rewarding" the customers means getting them to sign up for a store credit or debit card which is all well and good. When it becomes such a focus that they start posting "good people" lists and calling you out over your ear piece the working environmnet changes from excellent service based to "Get this card please to get these people off my back!" I understand the company makes a lot of money from these incentives but I do not think it is right to make your employees feel like they are inadequate by not continuously being able to get people to sign up for rewards.
Advice to Senior Management
I do not think it is wise to single out employees for now achieving accounts by posting various lists. Sure reward those with accolades who do pump out rewards. Making visible lists, however, is a very passive-aggressive way of telling your under-preformers in the realm of cards (no matter how many excellent customer comments they get) that they aren't cutting it. Providing friendly, smiling customer service will begin to suffer as a result.
