Pros
You get to interact with a very diverse group of customers.
Cons
The HR department was very hard to get in touch with.
Pros
Friendly atmosphere, for the most part. Great benefits. Love the emphasis they put on customer service and appreciation. Very aggressive sales techniques.
Cons
I can't really think of any overall cons. I felt outside my comfort zone working as a sales associate. Some employees are very competitive with there sales approach.
Advice to Senior Management
Sometimes even though someone is a great sales associate doesn't always mean they have the best customer service. You can always make a sale, but sometimes it takes a lot of work to appease a customer.
Pros
There are plenty of ways in order to increase your earnings, in a way, you are your own boss. Opportunities for advancement are everywhere. You are introduced to a wide variety of brands which is great knowledge to have if you wish to go further in the Fashion Industry.
Cons
It can be a little competitive with sales; therefore, if you do not work well under pressure, sales at Nordstrom probably isn't the right job for you.
Pros
Nice and loyal employees all around. Employees are always reminded of serving our customers and customer service.
Cons
when it comes to promotions and growth, most of the time it's not what you know, but it's who you know. Having the right personality, look and attitude can help you get promoted faster in the company. Many levels of hierarchy and politics. Teams can be very clique.
Advice to Senior Management
Take the time to recognize hardworking and dedicated employees who don't draw attention to themselves but actual backbones to the success of the team/group
Pros
People are great
Pay is great
the company culture is fantastic
Build great relationship with outstanding clients, unlike some other clothing retail chains
only sell/carry top of the line fashionable items.
Cons
the only problem is that you have to work when every one else is not, such as on holidays etc. but with that said they compensate you accordingly and I have never had a problem coming in to work on those days. Nordstrom is the Best!
Advice to Senior Management
you're doing great, keep up the good work and continue provided critical feedback to help your employees succeed at their position.
Pros
Inspirational management team, strong relationships, low turnover. Happy place to be.
Cons
Big companies can be slow to change, but Nordstrom is still among the best.
Pros
Meet new people your age.
Good for a first time job.
House Parties
Cons
Management does not lead by example.
A lot of drama between employees and management
Advice to Senior Management
Start listening to the employees and lead by example.
Pros
Fellow employees (non management) are great to work with, They have good benefits including profit sharing, and 401k, discount, and occasionally you get a cash payout for your profit sharing if the company does well enough.
Cons
Most managers form Cliques, and are very exclusionary toward other employees. They behave like high school kids and gossip about their employees behind their backs. If you want to move up in the company you can just forget about having any kind of social, love, or family life because they want you at the store at all times, and you have to be willing up just pack up and leave to go live somewhere that you probably don't even want to live to move up. If you do happen to make it to management, and you're in a particular position for too long and not wanting to move up, they will push you out to make room for someone they can pay less.
You can forget about seeing you families for the holidays if you don't live in the same city as them, all employees are required to make themselves available to work any schedule during sale times and holiday times.
Customers don't go to Nordstrom to buy clothes anymore, they just go to rent them. They waste the sales persons time running them like a rag doll, try on clothes in the fitting rooms, take the clothes home and wear them for a night or an event, and then just return them. This company is so afraid of saying "No" to the up-tight, snobby, rich folk that have a false sense of entitlement who come into the stores. You can return anything at anytime, even years later, but the company is the one who loses money, the sales people are.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't be afraid to say "No" to a customer once in a while. You're taking money away from the hardworking people that make this company run, and it's just not fair. Also, treat the employees with a little more respect. We should have the option (within reason) to spend time with our families that we've had to leave to continue working at Nordstrom, for the holidays. Lastly, hire managers that are mature enough to handle their positions and not talk behind employees backs.
Pros
They consistently urge you to bring more to the table. They get the most out of their employees. Even if you have sub-par customer service skills; in one months time you'll be seasoned.
Cons
Politics consistently play a role in who is promoted. There is a very "high school" feeling amongst the employers, and you must be very careful in whom you confide with. Aggressive/ Commission-based sales leads to conflict amongst employees(sales are often stolen w/ management doing nothing about the circumstance).
Pros
Discount good pay friendly co workers
Cons
Inconsistent schedule Too much time spent away from selling floor for CM
Advice to Senior Management
Don't be to chummy with certain team members, it's noticed more then you realize
