Pros
Much room for career advancement if you're willing to stick it out, HR dept if there are any issues, employee discount is not too bad
Cons
Commission environment is difficult considering Nordstrom return policy, returns hit the employee for up to a year. Sometimes and often you cannot control the costumers abuse of the return policy
Pros
Excellent people, opportunity for growth and great products
Cons
long hours on your feet
Advice to Senior Management
none!
Pros
frindly co-workers; high "esprit-des-corps"; positive enthusiastic environment.
Cons
pressure to sell; emphasis on youth; somewhat stifling in that keeping up their wholesome image is uppermost. No outside employee activities, such as softball teams, bowling leagues, parties or socializing is encouraged or sponsored; in fact employee fraternizing is discouraged, and in the case of managers is banned.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen more to employees; more opportunities to hear criticism without fear of retribution.
Pros
You basically make your own paycheck, what you put in is what you get out. It is a fun environment and there is plenty of opportunity to move up within the company. This company is also great with working with your schedule and giving time off.
Cons
It is hard to get benefits and hard to keep them. Sometimes it is clear that promotions are given based on sales ability, not on management abilities, which creates some incompetent management at times.
Advice to Senior Management
Give more praise to the employees not just the managers, since it is the employees working very hard everyday to build strong customer relationships and driving the business.
Pros
Compensation is above average
Internal recruiting
Great co-workers
Great benefits
In-depth training
Flexible with schedule
Best retailer to work for
Fun work atmosphere
Helpful management and Human Resources department
Open-door policy
Cons
Difficult hiring process
Long hours during Half Yearly and Anniversary sales
Certain months are difficult to meet set goals
Fast-working environment
Advice to Senior Management
I enjoyed working as an Intern. The management development program was useful and gave me a lot of insight and experience in order to excel in the company.
Pros
Advancement opportunities. Benefits after 3 months. Employee discount.
Cons
Hard to start as sales associate and make enough money to support your family.
Pros
Good pay
Other employees are (mostly) great
store manager is kind, listens to feedback and always greets employees by name
management provides support for team
Trend show events can be very stressful, but very rewarding and fun!
Training events from specific brands. An employee can cultivate cosmetic artistry skills
Cons
Pre sell (if you've ever worked in cosmetics, you know what this is.)
long hours, nights, weekends, holidays
pressure to make goals can be suffocating
long hours in high heels!
Pros
It sounds crazy, but I love the constant need to be on top of it by meeting my numbers in sales expectations. It gives me the drive, that for me ends in pride of all my accomplishments. My position was not easily attained, nor was it easy to meet all of the expectations from the get go,BUT hard work pays off with Nordstrom.
Cons
The only downside to working for Nordstrom are the "sharks" you will work with.I guess the commission enviorment, with the high sales expectations will ALWAYS bring the worst out in some.I also didn't like te feeling of failing, without any support, from my management team.Fearing that my my job was on the line all the time as a newer employee.
Advice to Senior Management
Take the time to properly coach your employees around issues that you are quick to notice, but not very good about helping one improve.
Pros
The people are sincerely nice, the managers are very helpful and the calling off standards are very flexible.
Cons
You do not have a set schedule in the customer service department.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep up with the changes and keep in mind your stats and you will do fine.
Pros
If your are a sales person you can make great money and have fun.
Cons
Managers are over worked under paid and not treated well.
Advice to Senior Management
Its all a political game. If the people above you like you, your in.
