    I have been working at Nordstrom as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    They have an open door policy so if you ever need anything from your manager or another senior you can ask at anytime. They always want you to grow with the company and truly want to see you succeed.

    Cons

    The only downside is that working on commission can sometimes be difficult and causes employees to not always get along. However, if you have a great team and you all know how to be fair then it can be really fun working for commission.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the great work. This company is spectacular.

    Pros

    Great company that really cares about their employees. One could easily start a career at Nordstrom and work their way up the company.

    Cons

    Some smaller roles are often left with monotonous tasks, but this comes with working with such a large corporation

    Doesn't Recommend

    I worked at Nordstrom part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    One of the pros working in the cosmetics department as a part time sales person, was at times, the flexibility with schedule; working with and meeting lots of great people;

    Cons

    Dealing with incompetent leadership in management; unqualified individuals in management roles, as well as being promoted to roles they never earned or deserved; the pressure to sell as much as you can even if there aren't any customers to sell to; inconsistency in applying the rules across the board; if you call out sick, they call you and tell you that you have to come in; lots of favoritism among managers and some staff; many inappropriate conversations among managers with staff, such as patronizing; managers unprofessionally reprimanding staff in front of peers and customers;

    Advice to Management

    Hire qualified individuals with great people, communication, skills and interpersonal skills to lead the staff; please stop putting individuals in roles that they are not qualified to do; If you're going to put someone in HR, make sure she is qualified to do the job, as such to run a department; additionally, treat everyone equally and fairly; also, you expect staff to provide their customers with excellent customer service, well you should provide your staff the same courtesy and the same level of service that you expect the staff to provide the customers; oh, and take your staff seriously; if a staff tells you that the customer was wrong and that the customer was disrespectful and out of line, stick up for your staff because "THE CUSTOMER ISN'T ALWAYS RIGHT"; stop letting customers abuse and disrespect staff and get away with it; also, stop enabling customers to become "chronic returners;" customers make it a habit of returning things just because you let them; the employee morale is so low that its ridiculous; you have great people leaving for other jobs or some taking sebaticles because they can't take the stress that you put them through;

    I worked at Nordstrom full-time

    Pros

    Surprising enough, it was always seen as a positive to future employers. Nordstrom is known for it's high level of customer service and future employers like to see a solid foundation of customer service skills at the beginning of someone's career

    Cons

    Working in retail is tough, long hours especially around Christmas. The compensation is pretty good among big box retailers, however in slow months the compensation structure can be detrimental since commission is not easily earned.
