Management is better than most in retail

Current Employee - Sales Associate in Tampa, FL

I have been working at Nordstrom Rack part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The management is really nice, most of the people who work there are fun.

    Cons

Can be really overwhelming when busy. Scheduling doesn't always make sense - end up short staffed when more people are needed. It is a lot of work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some things make no sense at all - like stuffing the floor full of merchandise to the point where it is nearly impossible to keep it looking decent, and is a nightmare to find things for both the staff and the customers. It is the store policy to have everything on the floor - but it can make it complete chaos.

I have been working at Nordstrom Rack

    Pros

Good pay, flexible schedules, positive, friendly and fun work environment

    Cons

You have to continually clean up after people who throw stuff on the floor and misplace stuff when you try to keep it clean and neat, I think the registers are confusing its a lot to learn, I hate the mobiles they make us use to check out customers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Yes if you work hard and show managers you want to move up.. u can move up fast

I have been working at Nordstrom Rack full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

higher starting pay for associates, good benefits, great company culture and management, they put a lot of responsibility in your hands from the get-go which can be a little intimidating but is great if you plan to advance with the company. If you prove you're reliable and express the desire to grow with the company, you will. I've worked in retail for a long time and the starting pay for this job was much higher than any other. It's not tons of money, but it's better than a lot of other places.

    Cons

very busy, lots of multi-tasking, the employee discount could be higher...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Always be open about the fact that this job is busier than other retail jobs. I love the "use your best judgement" mentality.

I have been working at Nordstrom Rack full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Benefits are available to everyone, the pay was great, I enjoyed the hours most of the time, off for like all holidays pretty ,much, very team oriented, amazing managers

    Cons

Couple managers would always sit in the office and do "paper work" and text and talk to other managers and do nothing all day pretty much (only a select few managers)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great place to work other than the few slack managers who did nothing most of the time. Make sure to continue to reward your employees and keep an eye on your managers/

If you can keep a cool head in a very, very fast paced environment, the benefits, quick promotions, and networking are WORTH it.

I have been working at Nordstrom Rack full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The company takes care of you. If you're a good employee, they will try to promote you quickly. And if you put in the work and effort, the company loves to promote from within. The possibilities are endless. Plus, health insurance, reduced stock, 401k - it really is a good company.

    Cons

It's a very fast paced environment. You need to be able to keep a cool head and be very patient. If you can't, the Rack isn't for you.

    Decent place to work

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at Nordstrom Rack

    Pros

20% discount except for special days, discount increases to 30%

    Cons

Management encourages unhealthy competitiveness with opening "rewards" cards. Claims it is free money to be made, but of course, it shows up on your pay stub- you are taxed for it at the end of the year.
