    Pros

Your paycheck is based on how much you sell. The more you sell, the more you make. Great benefits. You receive your base pay if you don't meet your commission goals.

    Cons

The overall environment is very competitive. It is sometimes hard to sell when it slow which is why you have to build great relationships with customers.

    Pros

Employee discount, overall easy job, doesn't require previous experience.

    Cons

If you are working in a competitive department (handbags, cosmetics, shoes) then prepare for some petty disagreements over commission and passive aggressive coworkers. If you're a student looking for a casual summer job and don't care too much about how much you're paid, I'd recommend a slower department (accessories, teens, etc...) but if you don't care about the drama and want to get paid more I'd go with higher traffic departments.

    Pros

Offers flexibility in schedule, working with people in various backgrounds, and great open door policy. It is a great opportunity to work with a team but keep your individual style.

    Cons

Politics is high depending on which department you get assigned to. I just happened to have been assigned to a department whose manager is quite good, but listened to the assistant manager who I believe looked down on people. However, other employees who worked for a different department heads are quite happy.

    Pros

Every month all the girls in our department (TBD) would receive free jeans. It depends on your manager how much gratis you'll receive a year. If you work hard, you can be paid really well. During holidays and company sales, expect to get paid twice as much or even more than you usually do. There's a lot of opportunities of growth if you hustle. In a few months a few girls in my department were offered assistant manager positions and I was offered a position as a personal stylist.

    Cons

Lots of gossip between sales reps and managers. People play politics. If you don't sell much, you won't make much money. The longer you work, the more you sell…which mean you'll be getting more returns…which in turn makes it harder to keep your sales per hour high throughout the pay periods.

    Pros

Being a sales representative at Nordstrom is great if you need a non-traditional schedule. Great if you are a student or have children. Requested time off is easily given in most cases. Training is extensive (for retail) and there's plenty of downtime to learn the ropes. As far as growth, it is easy to do with the right mentor and management. That is key within Nordstrom. If you have a Manager who you look up to, you should follow them at any location they get promoted to. The sales associate role is strictly commission based which is great within the first six months.

    Cons

The first and most important Con of working at Nordstrom are the INEXPERIENCED managers! Although every manger has a sales background most of them are not too savvy in the leadership area. This makes for a very upset team and lack of loyalty which in turn creates a high turn around rate. The turn around rate was so high in my department that half of my sales time was helping new employees. The second Con is the return policy and fraud. Nordstrom is known for its amazing return policy and customer loyalty. But when it comes to protecting their employees against losses or fraud Nordstrom FAILS. For instance, when handling a fraud return (stolen merchandise, not purchased from Nordstrom, or purchased with a fake acct. or gift cards) the manager on duty will tell you to handle the situation by telling the customer one thing. But when the manager shows up to speak with the actual FRAUD customer they will let them get away with the act! This is because Nordstrom implements no return rules! So the employee gets hit with the fraud return at the end of it all. This is why its important to know about the area of where your Nordstrom is located. Fraud sales will ALWAYS hit you as a sales associate but the frequency will mostly depend on the LOCATION. The third Con is the commission pay. Because of the faulty return policy after about the first six months you will get hit with crazy returns. Its your responsibility to make up your negative balance before you start to make commission. As with any commission based job it can be a great thing and horrible. In the case of Nordstrom, with their return policy (or lack thereof) its not such a great thing.

    Advice to Management

Train your management as leaders first then everything else. At my location the Management always looked overwhelmed and were scatter brained. It came in the way of them actually being able to build a solid team and leading them in the right direction.

    Pros

Good company and the ability to advance is there if you're willing to bust your butt for it. Hours given are directly tied to your production.

    Cons

The hours are normal retail rotating and shifts can start as early as 5am and end as late as 12pm. While upper level management is supportive, favoritism can easily be spotted in the lower management positions.
