Would have been amazing if my counter manager was a team player, but she was always out for only herself.

    Pros

Most people were amazing, able to get breaks due to all the staff on the floor (whereas in the past I was employed with a lot of companies whom refuse to schedule enough labor hours), great incentives in the cosmetics department, loved offering samples to customers via mail/follow ups with customers - being able to build great relationships and client base was awesome, hourly wage plus commission in cosmetics was great.

    Cons

Management did not train, AT ALL. Too worried about their own agenda, no communication unless it had to do with pushing sales - even unnecessary ones which would obviously turn into returns which, to me, defeats the purpose. I want my clients to be happy with their product then come back for more and other items. I was unable to continue due to the lack of effort on the managers part to pass on knowledge of the basic job duties and requirements - ridiculous actually.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers should be required to properly train all employees despite how busy it is. To schedule the first day of training (shadow day) on the first day of a huge event is not very professional - it's simply looking out for one's best interest to gain assistance. I should have taken that as a hint to return to my former employer, but I assumed it to be a fluke. In the long run this lack of common sense really caused all parties to suffer rather than have an opportunity to thrive going above and beyond in all aspects. When specific duties are unknown it causes distress for everyone.

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

For a retailer, the benefits are good ... stock purchase plan, 401K with matching up to 2% of salary (though would be better at 5%), profit sharing, health insurance, dental plan, eye care plan, frequently free blood tests, etc. Customers overall are interesting and just plain fantastic!

    Cons

Many of the managers, even for some of the largest departments of the company stores, are young and lack adequate experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote more senior energetic, successful sales people to manage and motivate departments.

    I worked at Nordstrom

    Pros

Nordstrom is one of the highest paying retail stores out there. Easy to move to different departments.

    Cons

Commission is not always good. Inconsistent scheduling. Returns come out of your money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promotions shouldn't be based on popularity & kissing up.
