I worked at Nordstrom part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Definitely a great paying part time job (with experience). Flexible schedule (as with most retail).

    Cons

Part time isn't part time when they're short-staffed or busy season hits. They expect you to increase your hours based on their demand when the original agreement was limited hours. They also have implemented, or rather become increasingly obsessed with, an almost cold-calling system to retain business. The company itself pushes and supports online business more than in store so sales associates aren't supported much beyond in-store management.

    Pros

Fun and fast paced environment. If you have a passion for clothes, Nordstrom is a great place to work at. Compared to other entry level retail positions, Nordstrom's Commission pay scale is fair, and led to decent paychecks (about 2x what I made as a sales associate at JCPenney).

    Cons

Seeing as Nordstrom prides themselves on top-tier customer service, the sales floor will constantly be filled with many sales associates. While the customer is able to have one on one interactions with sales associates, the total amount of customer interactions decreases for each individual associate. In plain term, the more staffed the sales floor is, the less money each sales associate will make

    Advice to Management

Not much criticism towards management to be honest. All of my experiences were good, and I would definitely work their again.

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

High end products, very professional atmosphere, fun job when it's a steady flow of customers, generous sampling of products, pay is fair and can be increased immediately by your sales activity, friendly atmosphere, wonderful customers, loyal customers which contribute to steady commissions.

    Cons

Standing long hours, not busy after 7pm(very boring), lots of cleaning, don't wear heels, sometimes unrealistic goals.

    Advice to Management

Need to adjust the daily goals for appropriate real days, advertise for more night sales, cut the floor if it's not busy, If someone I hired with the understanding that they won't have to work a particular day of the week, honor that agreement!!!

    Pros

Great company; many benefits, and opportunities for career movement / advancement.

    Cons

Training is not consistent; it can be very good or very poor. As a result safety can be a concern. Life / work balance is in favor of work -there is no balance.

    Advice to Management

Do a better job of training in areas where work can involve life safety issues. Allow your employees a better balance of work and family time.

    Pros

Looks great on a resume to future employers, lots of room to grow into entirely different departments within the company after six months at position, good benefits including health, 401K, stock options, and more.

    Cons

Politics almost everywhere you go. You really have to drink the Kool-Aid here to succeed and its all about who you know to move up, sometimes the hours are inhuman. Not unusual for a closer to open the next day. Prepare to spend a lot of time at your store from working and then from shopping, it becomes your life

    Advice to Management

More of a "WE" instead of a "I" approach with your employees would be nice. You can get singled out often from managers not making their numbers.
