Pros
Good pay, discount on clothes, opportunity to make good money.
Cons
Not much room for growth unless you dedicate your whole life to working there.
Advice to Senior Management
Remember that your employees often have lives outside of working for Nordstrom and that isn't their career most of the time.
Pros
Gives people the opportunity to learn how to deal with different types of customers and enables people to grow personally and professionally.
Cons
Making numbers is very important. Sales is a lot of times very cut throat because everyone is competing against one another.
Pros
Got to learn about how to combine different clothing styles. Some people do help you build your customer basis.
Cons
Very competitive and cutthroat. Some people will flat out steal your customers and that is a problem. There are some people will come to different departments that do not know about that specific department and sell the customer wrong things.
Advice to Senior Management
The economy stinks and every single persons sales numbers are down, by getting rid of people who are under the bar and replacing them do not help.
Pros
It provides a great opportunity to hone interpersonal skills, in addition to creating a competitive atmosphere in which each sales associate is encouraged to "sell more, make more," the saying that guides all efforts to maximizing sales through unparalleled customer service.
Cons
Some days are just slow, and no customers come in to make purchases. Even after calling customers and inviting them into the store, there will simply be some days that you will not be able to make your sales goals for the day. This can be frustrating just because as an employee, you know your pay is being affected, but it can be even more frustrating when you get scolded by upper management in the company, despite putting in as much time and effort as possible.
Pros
Fun atmosphere, every day is different, time at work goes by fast!
Cons
Unpredictable pay, heavy work hours during holiday/family time
Advice to Senior Management
None, great job!
Pros
Commission really kept me motivated to come to work every single day. I think I was compensated fairly. The team i worked with was absolutely amazing and I was even given a chance to learn about merchandising the floor. I didn't have any problem taking time off.
Cons
Closing! The store closes when the last customer leaves, which always after closing hours.
Pros
Very entreprenuerial-you got to run your business like it was your own business! Promote from within philosophy worked; you really learned the culture and believed in it.
Cons
Nordstrom is not good at clearly communicating opportunities. They tend to beat around the bush and are unclear about how you should improve, yet will hold you back if you have not improved. They need to be more direct in their coaching style.
Advice to Senior Management
Clearly communicate strengths and opportunities and make sure the person understands that their opportunities will hold them back if not corrected. They also need to hold everyone to the same standards. If one person is told they need to be running an increase to get promoted and then you promote someone else who isn't running an increase, it looks really BAD.
Pros
Family atmoshere, good benefits including employee discount, lots of opportunity for career growth, good pay for people with sales and customer service skills
Cons
all jobs require working weekends and holidays,
Advice to Senior Management
stay with one direction instead of constantly deciding on something new and changing focus, be more open to flexible hours for certain jobs
Pros
For retail, it has the best pay.
Cons
Management plays huge favors with their friends. Unless you're in that inner circle, forget about being treated fairly and moving up in the company.
For a company that strives to offer the best quality to its customers, its funny how Nordstroms still uses such ancient equipement. Then again, there are more 'Made in China' products than anything else, so I guess it makes sense.
This company was made into popular and successful because of how they took care of their customers and their employees as well. It was a successful formula and now everything is completely opposite. Nordstrom is no longer Nordstrom. It's like any other retail store. This company will fail as other companies that have failed using the same 'numbers is everything' formula.
Advice to Senior Management
Get back to doing what made Nordstrom famous. Numbers isn't everything. Remember the saying we learned from the Nordstrom family? Take care of your customers and they'll take care of you. Same can be said about your employees.
Pros
The pay is good for retail.
Cons
Department management is incompetent and inexperienced. People with actual management skills do not get placed in management, sales superstars do. These are two different skill sets and are not interchangeable. Nepotism runs rampant and there is blatant age discrimination. If you are over the age of 35, look out, there is undoubtably some 22 year old just itching to shove you out the door. Nordstrom has a fear of technology, and systems are ten years old or more, it should not take ten minuets to send an e-mail. The company has lost touch with its core customers by going higher and higher end.
Advice to Senior Management
Designer merchandise is great, but it should not be the main focus. The majority of the customers who shop at Nordstrom have neither the money nor the fashion savvy to wear a good most designer goods. Double digit same store sales decreases should be a clear indicator of this. Merchandise mix is impacting sales more than the economy is.
