Salesperson

Sales Associate (Current Employee)
San Mateo, CA

I have been working at Nordstrom part-time for more than a year

ProsI am very fortunate and grateful for the opportunity to work at Nordstrom, which is one of the most successful specialty retailers in the business

ConsThe Bad: Returns can affect your paycheck and your sales goals. Since Nordstrom is high on the customer service reputation, their return policy is very liberal so 99.99% of the time merchandise can be brought back and credited toward the selling employee.

It's exciting to own your own business.

Summer Intern (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I worked at Nordstrom as an intern for more than a year

ProsI loved the commission environment and responsibilities that it entails. Their internship program was also a great learning experience, with many challenges.

ConsDue to the commission nature of pay, it can get awkward and catty on the sales floor. Futile daily tasks were also a hinderance to selling. When the store was not busy, work was excruciatingly slow.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy best managers were those that did not micromanage.

Great Experience

Department Manager (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Nordstrom full-time for more than a year

Pros- Learn a broad spectrum of business practices
- Great experience
- Wonderful employees / co-workers
- Autonomy

Cons- Work-life balance in management is almost non existent
- Could be a pro for some individuals, but there is an emphasis on mobility
- Retail is a hard field, you can do everything in your power to drive business and yet fall short, when you are chastised for that it can be a bit disheartening

Great Place to Work

Salesperson (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Nordstrom full-time for less than a year

ProsGreat environment to work in with very supportive managers. An excellent place to launch a career in the fashion and/or retail field. Overall a really nice place to work!

ConsThe hours on the retail store side are irregular, and the work is surprisingly tiring. However that's to be expected with any retail job and you know that when you accept.

Overall a good experience

Retail Sales Associate (Former Employee)
San Mateo, CA

I worked at Nordstrom part-time for more than a year

ProsYou basically get to work with your friends. The pay can be alright if you work really hard, you get a discount on clothes and it is a pretty relaxed environment.

ConsYou work horrible hours (nights/weekends/holidays). It is commission based so on off seasons when it is slow it can be really hard to make money. Working in the clothing departments can be extremely labor intensive. Also, most of the managers are children.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't let being a "manager" go to your head. After all, you are still in retail.

Good company and benefits, work life balance is a challenge.

Client Coordinator (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Nordstrom full-time for more than a year

ProsFast growth if you work hard, good base pay and commission scheme

ConsUnpredictable schedule, no support for continuing education, days off always split, no weekend/holiday time offs, there's too much bureaucracy when it comes to who gets promoted or managed out

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest more in learning and development. Talented and brilliant people need to sharpen the saw too, otherwise they get bored and burned out. Take care of your employees as much as you take care of your customers. Have work-life balance programs and create a culture where politics and bureaucracy can be minimized.

– I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
