I worked at Norfolk Southern as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

NS is a very secure company that has been a leader in the industry for years. The internship program pays pretty well, can range from any location on the east coast, and requires a lot of travel, but you get to see amazing production. I particularly was in the Bridge & Building department of MoW so I dealt with a lot of structural work, bridge inspection, and tie replacement.

They essentially want to train you to become a manager of a given territory.

    Cons

As far as being an intern, there wasn't much direction when it came to a daily agenda. My boss in particular was so occupied with his current projects, that he barely had time to really enlighten me on what exactly the job demanded. The intern program is also fairly new for this company, so they don't have all the bugs worked out just yet.

There aren't set hours for this job, you'll start work at 6am until.....

I worked at Norfolk Southern as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Good environment, with interesting work. There was a variety of types of work to do, it wasn't just focused on one language, etc. so there was a lot to learn as an intern. The team I was on was very good.

    Cons

Not many cons here as someone still in school looking for good experience. Sometimes you weren't sure how your work was affecting the overall flow, but it was still interesting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

NS has very skilled managers who are trained very well to make good decisions. Started with a one year management trainee program that help get me up to speed to learn the ins and outs of the railroad.

The people are friendly. The benefits are amazing. The pay is competitive. I felt I learned a lot from my position.

    Cons

The management is very old fashioned and is not open to a ton of change. Also there is not a lot of room for personal growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Norfolk Southern as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Good amount of positive reinforcement, would be a great job if you needed to spend the summer studying for an LSAT, long lunches with free workout classes

    Cons

people don't like it-was told to get out while I can multiple times, very rarely had enough work to do so I was bored out of my mind for a majority of my time here,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

don't take on an intern if there isnt enough work to do. invest in the idea of flex hours
