Good company with some good people, the location of the main office was too far out from the train station

Lotus Notes Administrator (Former Employee)
Fairfax, VA

I worked at Nortel Government Solutions full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThis is a good company with plenty of good opportunities if you have a security clearance; If you had Top Secret with SCI clearance you will be a high asset to the company

ConsYou need a Security Clearance

Good Team

Senior Engineer (Former Employee)
Arlington, VA

I worked at Nortel Government Solutions

ProsSolid teamwork environment. Caring on-site management both customer and employer. Opportunity to learn and advance and to lead others. Educational encouragement. Awesome location.

ConsInterdepartmental combat. Political in the extreme. Crazy clients. Silo mentality among some of the management. Limited communication with headquarters when the s*** hit the fan.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore structured approach to management. More even distribution of workload among engineering team. Fewer fluff meetings. Foster more accountability during project lifecycle.

When it was Nortel my experience was great, but once bought by Avaya focuses changed and employees downlplayed.

Technical Support Specialist (Current Employee)
Alexandria, VA

I have been working at Nortel Government Solutions

ProsCompetitive benefits package
Constant encouragement for professional development
steady employment as long as you do your job and don't ruffle any feathers.

ConsRestructured vacation plan which stripped of employees of their PTO and ultimately limited the amount earned.
Management's focus on the bottom line has really taken a toll on the employees morale.
Constant restructuring prevents there being any sort of consistency with this place which creates feelings of uneasiness.
Although yearly reviews are performed pay raises are no longer contingent upon results therefore employees do not feel their hard work is rewarded.
Bonuses are almost non existent and management's sentiment is "just be happy you have a job"

Advice to Senior ManagementReward employees for their hard work.
Allow tuition reimbursement and make the employee feel like they are more than fuel for the "corporate machine"

Not worth the effort.

Systems Engineer IV (Former Employee)

I worked at Nortel Government Solutions

ProsDecent pay-rate. If you know more than your manager (which isn't a tough accomplishment), it can be a cake-walk of a job.

ConsNot very challenging. Insane amounts of both office and real politics, so if you can't/don't play the game, this isn't the place for you.

Except to work on a variety of projects that never reach a production level due to bureaucracy.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlace a a more technically savvy person in charge of who is hired and have them keep up with what their clients are doing.

The person who hired me was not very knowledgeable and seemed to spend more time doing I-don't-know-what than their job. Their office was vacant 4 out of 5 trips I made to see them and they were very "out of the loop" when it came to what the client was having us work on.

Systems Engineer IV (Current Employee)

I have been working at Nortel Government Solutions

ProsI like the fact that they have a telecommuting Policy and 3 weeks vacation (no additional time for sick leave though)

ConsSeems that there is no opportunity for promotion except to employees who pally with senior management (at least from my observation). This is the experience with my own specific department. I'm not sure if this is true for the company as a whole though.

Short term disability is only 60% of your salary.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest more in your employees. Training would be nice!
