I have been working at Nortel Networks

    Pros

Nortel pays well and there is flexibility for both work schedules and work locations (teleworking is common).

    Cons

The company is bankrupt and therefore there is limited potential.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cash is king and M&A is not a strategy that works for Nortel.

    I worked at Nortel Networks

    Pros

    The benefits were very good
Good opportunity to learn technology (not anymore, I wouldn't think)
    Excellent tuition reimbursement program.
Employees given bonuses despite horrendous business climate

    Cons

    Management was terrible
Merit isn't rewarded. Often the *worst* employees in the group were promoted, just to get rid of them.
Absolutely no training - new hires learn through "trial by fire"
Transformed into a nightmare of policies and procedures for everything, that didn't work and hampered actual productivity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I'd say it is a moot point at this stage. Management did everything wrong, and milked every last dime out of the company they could before everything completely sank.

I have been working at Nortel Networks

    Pros

Great products, wonderful working environment with intelligent, cooperative co-workers. Ability to work from home when necessary and adjust work schedule if required.

    Cons

Senior management is terrible, more concerned with their own well being than insuring the company survives. In spite of numerous attempts to counteract it, each product group maintained their own silo of development, marketing etc., leading to inefficiencies and poor product interoperability.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Quit.

I have been working at Nortel Networks

    Pros

Good work and life balance - you will get enough flexibility to work from home or on off hours if you choose to do so and telecommuting is encouraged.
Good salary and benefits - even in these tough times Nortel pays well and contributes well in 401K plans.
Good technology - and its products are well known in the marketplace, although with tough competition from Cisco, Juniper etc.
Smart peers who are helpful and dedicated.

    Cons

Might not survive this downturn of economy. Terrible executive leadership and board seems to choose all the wrong CEO's over and over again. Maybe board of directors are the problem.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Starting from CEO down to 2 levels of management - executives are good in making stories but terrible in either vision or leadership. They should be sacked first without any severance

I have been working at Nortel Networks

    Pros

There are still some good people working in the ranks despite the employee reductions and exodus.

    Cons

Many of the fundamental problems that plagued Nortel for years remain unsolved or even exaggerated over the last few years. Senior leadership is putting some parts of the company into a real hole.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Process for the sake of process, multiple layers of bureaucracy, and constant departmental re-organizations are the antithesis of innovation, passion, and "business made simple" values that you preach.

Current Employee - Lean Six Sigma Black Belt in Billerica, MA

I have been working at Nortel Networks

    Pros

There is no good reason to work at Nortel Networks. However, the ability to work from home makes life at Nortel a bit more tolerable. In fact it is the one reason why I am still working at Nortel.

    Cons

The leadership is among the most poor I've ever had the displeasure to work for. They are constantly pushing Lean Six Sigma, Black Belt project down our throats and they themselves don't adhere to Lean Six Sigma basic principles. They seem to forget to take the time to talk to and involve the employees with the most experience and greatest understanding in the Six Sigma effort. It has become, like most everything in Nortel, a who knows whom exercise in popularity leaving out the most qualified to lead the effort to correct whats ailing Nortel.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean house among your rank and at the V.P. and director levels. It's a good old boy network working for there own survival rather than the greater good of the company and the rest of the Nortel employees.
