I have been working at North Carolina Department of Revenue

    Pros

Good work-life balance as compared to public accounting or corporate. Surprising amount of opportunity, Great place to start your career and also to end it.

    Cons

Terrible place for the middle of your career. No equity at all in terms of raises or work. Upper management is highly capricious and disconnected. Managers prefer to dump work on their best people rather than actually deal with problem employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on retention and internal equity rather than recruitment. Don't settle for sub-par hires and do not pay new people more than long term performers.

I have been working at North Carolina Department of Revenue

    Pros

Low stress levels, ability to learn new things, generous time off

    Cons

Asked to take on more responsibilities with no extra pay, little room for growth/promotion

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more room for growth and development of employees instead of always hiring outside talent.

I have been working at North Carolina Department of Revenue full-time

    Pros

Great benefits such as health, vision and dental.

    Cons

If you need a lateral move (transfer to another city due to upcoming nuptials), upper management stated that one has to apply as if the individual is coming from outside the department.

I have been working at North Carolina Department of Revenue

    Pros

    good entry level pay
    good benefits
    employees are almost never fired
    almost no overtime required
flexible work schedules depending on your manager

    Cons

    senior leadership makes poor decisions
    terrible communication
    lack of promotional opportunities
employees are often promoted based on seniority or nepotism

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The department has the lemons dilemma. Performance is tracked but there are no incentives to work hard. All employees are paid the same thing as everyone else with their job title. The hardworking employees normally leave for the private sector leaving behind the lemons. Promotions are often based on seniority and not talent so the leadership consists of all the lemons.
