I worked at North Shore Animal League America

    Pros

Co-workers nice and generally helpful. If you make it to benefits, they are good.

    Cons

Terrible pay, Upon hire, was told a significant increase would occur, never did. Management needs to be re-organized. Employees are not recognized or rewarded for their efforts or work. Promotions seem arbitrary (who that manager likes that week) as well as schedule preferences. Animals also are not treated as well as they promote. Several animals died during my working their due to employee error, and several sick animals were adopted out when they should have been kept in the medical center until well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try recognizing employees for their work performed, and stop asking people to do things that are beyond their job description and training level, some of which is not legal to do. Also pay people a wage that is decent for what they do and for the hours they are working.

    Too Much Micro Management

I worked at North Shore Animal League America part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Get to spend time with some lovely Dogs and Cats. Employees can spend time with their favorite Cats and Dogs, also walk them and socialize them.

    Cons

I worked there for free as a volunteer and was micro-managed to no end. Can't imagine how they treat employees. Your heart breaks at the way they just let the Dogs sit in their Cages for weeks with hardly any walks or playtime.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Should stop taking in more Dogs than the shelter can handle.

I worked at North Shore Animal League America full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great ability to work and learn and see things you would not see in a normal clinic.

    Cons

Over looked the fact that a licensed Vet tech has gone to school but my need some training and that the the other techs are there to hold. The lack of consistency and support in the rooms with the doctors was difficult. There was sexual harassment and doctors who would look down on you if you tried to help. The None medical staff was often making the medical decisions as well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Needed a major over haul. Hear that they put a great doctor incharge of out patient care. I really hope for the animal and peoples sake it helps.

I have been working at North Shore Animal League America as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There is so much love for pets. People are talented. Benefits are second to none.

    Cons

This used to be a wonderful place. Once the founder died it went to hell. There is no board of directors yet there is no corruption. It is only incompetence that has cost animals their lives. It could be better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You are eating yourselves alive and destroying this organization. Step back and let people to their jobs before everyone goes.

I worked at North Shore Animal League America part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

North Shore animal League does do some good things in terms of animal rescues and adoptions.
The associates, the lower staff, and the volunteers are really great people and they care for the animals....really care

    Cons

This is a very mean spirited organization and the managers and higher uppers are extremely nasty self serving people. They pretend to love the animals and want what is best but really in the end all they want is a pay check and people thinking they are so terrific. The PR from NSAL is so good one would never know how horrendous an organization this really is to work for or to volunteer for. However I would never say don't adopt from them. I would say try other shelters first...ones that don't have the PR....In the end we want all animals to have a home but this organization really needs to learn what love is all about and not money. And this organization needs to treat its workers and volunteers with respect and honor which it does not.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just like all of Congress should be fired and replaced so should all of the management here. Whatever I would say would only be rationalized out by their petty stone hearts.

I worked at North Shore Animal League America full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

You can really feel like you are making a difference in the well being of animals.

    Cons

Upper management is out of touch with staff and takes their work ethic for granted. Even on the scale of non-profits, salaries are off. High turnover at all but the highest levels.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward the dedication of staff, promote communication between departments and return to the extended family atmosphere that the organization was built on.

I have been working at North Shore Animal League America

    Pros

Good benefits package including full medical and vacation, personal and sick days. The ability to work with animals and make a difference in their lives.

    Cons

Lack of recognition for your work. Unprofessional high-school like workplace. Given tasks that are not in your job description and not being compensated extra for them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to start recognizing people for their actual performance - the amount of incompetent people promoted simply because they get along with one of the bosses is appalling. There needs to be a real change in the professionalism exhibited by management. They will openly gossip about other employees and their interest in the animals only extends as far as the bottom line.
