There is a certain pride that goes along with working for NSLIJ and a nonprofit health system of this size.

I have been working at North Shore LIJ Health System full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The mantra is teamwork, the methodology to achieve this goal is spirited and praise for good work is sometimes only a phone call or an email away. Appreciation is often felt. Pockets of responsible, right acting individuals make it so you feel you are also "doing the right thing".

    Cons

Unfortunately the appreciation you feel is only emotionally felt, rewards are small and rarely, if ever, felt in the purse. The system, in it's attempt to manage and homogenize has instilled regulations that are restrictive and counter-productive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust your employees to be professionals. Reward your employees monetarily for going the extra mile.

I have been working at North Shore LIJ Health System full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

NSLIJ is widely recognized, so it is great to be able to drop a name that people will know. The system is rapidly expanding across a wide geographic region, and it's been great to be able to network between hospitals to help my department. The system offers great programs and services for its employees (so long as you're not on the outer reaches of "the net" at locations like Huntington, Southside, or Staten Island).

    Cons

Poor management and leadership. Perks for lousy employees, bigger work load for excellent employees. No room for advancement unless you're a doctor, nurse, PA, hospitalist, etc. No recognition of a job well done, only focus on errors and "room for improvement". They required that all employees come up with "personal goals" for 2014, but no follow through by management to actually help the employee achieve them. Favoritism by management gets choice employees better hours, lighter work load, special projects, and recognition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't alienate your employees by promoting an "us" and "them" mentality within the department. Do your best to value each of your employees. Also, take charge of your department. Wishy-washy "throw all of the ideas at the wall and see what sticks" projects cause nothing but chaos.

NSLIJ Motto: Quantity over Quality - Don't Drink the Kool Aid

I worked at North Shore LIJ Health System full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

You'll meet some great people. Some doctors and medical professionals that are in the field for the right reason. Good amount of time off.

    Cons

Don't expect any personal growth unless you have a hook. Go into the global email system and you'll be floored by the nepotism here. Everyone has the same 10-20 last names. Office politics can be debilitating. You'll spend more time figuring out how to work with people rather than actually doing work, you know, saving lives?

The system's motto is quantity over quality, as they buy up hospital after hospital, never stopping to make them better. They have 17 hospitals yet the only ones anyone ever wants to go to is NSUH and LIJ. Execs seem so detached from reality as there's been a few rounds of layoffs in the past few years but apparently supplemental helicopters are in the budget? Yeah, happy holidays!

    Pros

Great pay. Fantastic benefits. Even for part time. The health care benefits are phenomenal.

    Cons

Scheduling issues with change in floor management. As support staff sometimes really felt as if management on the floor could.really care less about us.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

PCA's are an integral part of your patient contact. They need to be treated as such in a consistent manner by floor management. Some managers were great others not so much.

I have been working at North Shore LIJ Health System as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

    Wide array of clientele.
Opportunities to move within the company.
Many different areas to explore one's interest.

    Cons

For MHC's, they cannot do assessments with clients, because the degree is not as recognized as an LCSW.
    Very busy organization.

I have been working at North Shore LIJ Health System part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Ummmmm, it's all good until you're not needed, then it's made impossible to continue working with integrity, company breaks you down....

    Cons

No one listens to staff. No compensation for a job well done, as of now, 2014 we all got a raise across the board, 2015 raise will be merit based.
A ceiling that doesn't allow for movement, or more $$$
Company expects employees 100%, good employees get worn down, bad employees or missing employees get rewarded and there is NO ONE TO TELL ABOUT IT!
No job security from company, under the guise of the law, they demote employees at will, instead of firing... Making it impossible to keep the position at the limited hours!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management has an agenda, do not want to hear the staffs suggestions on helping patient satisfaction. Management is told what to do by a higher up, that person is also told what to do. There is free thinking, just use a formula that doesn't seem efficient.
