I worked at North Shore University Hospital Manhasset full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

-abilily to move within the system (Manhasset-LIJ-Southside-14 hospitals)
    -job stability
-opportunity to move from bedside nursing to management / educator / clinician coordinator
    - competitive salary and PTO package
    -free indoor parking
-tertiary care center so Manhasset gets the highest acuity patients transferred in
-excellent orientation program (Hearst Critical Care Fellowship)

    Cons

-cuts in ancillary staff (patient care tech, unit secretary) have shifted more of the non-clinical duties to the nursing staff
-you're on your own when it comes to meals --> rarely get normal lunch (1 hour UNPAID deducted whether you eat or not?!) or required break time because there is no dedicated staff for relief
-small incremental cost-of-living raises (0-1.5%) are sometimes replaced with "lump" sum (ie your base rate doesn't improve)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-give back the PTO (24 hrs every year) that was taken from staff 3-4 years ago
    - stratify tasks on the floor so that RN staff are used to their best and highest use - this will reduce burnout and keep bedside nurses on staff longer bc they will not feel compelled to make a move

I have been working at North Shore University Hospital Manhasset

    Pros

Good benefit package, relatively nice work environment compared to nyc hospitals, people are generally nice/friendly to each other

    Cons

Not an easy commute, but it's not inherent to the hospital. During interview it seemed that hospital campus housing is guaranteed for anyone, which was not the case once we signed the contract. Demanding family members creating defensive medicine culture.

I have been working at North Shore University Hospital Manhasset

    Pros

They work with your schedule. Personally, my managers are very approachable. 80% of the MD's are nice to work with. The benefits package is very nice.

    Cons

They operate on the defensive. They keep on adding additional tasks for nursing staff to complete but our time is already limited. Some of their initiaves seem useless.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be firm and be fair. They need to learn that adding additional paperwork does not always lead to better care of patients.
