    Pros

    great coworkers and decent pay.

    Cons

Once the company merged with Nstar in Mass. It all went down hill. The took a week of bought vacation away and outsourced work to centers in Ohio and North Carolina. I no longer would recommend this as a place to work. All signs point to the call center eventually being closed.

I worked at Northeast Utilities as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Peers were extremely nice and helpful. Very professional culture with a family feeling.

    Cons

We were hired for a very specific influx of calls they were expecting, so training was very shortened and although the trainers were excellent they had no clear lead to how much we were expected to know. Although I thoroughly enjoyed my short contract, it was kind of sad to see every department outsourced and no cohesion between them. So customer service doing one thing and collections completely overturning their work...and the confusion goes on.

    Advice to Management

Although outsourcing may seem to be helping the bottom line, the quality of service definitely drops, no matter how hard you try to quality control. A lot of good sincere work comes from knowing you're part of the big family. Third party companies will never have that quality and there will always be tension between the two companies each blaming the other.

I have been working at Northeast Utilities full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Opportunities for growth, ever changing, great variety of work, wonderful customers

    Cons

Leadership is lacking with new regime (growth problem), lower perceived value of long term employees, new mantra "work the job not the hours", plenty of unpaid overtime available / required

    Advice to Management

Step back and review 'do more with less', clean out useless programs and processes, outsource less (bottom line might look good but total costs are rising)

    - People working there are great - Great team atmosphere - Supervisors are helpful - Many opportunities to learn - Paid well

    Cons

    - very bureaucratic, hard to get things done sometimes because of all the red tape

I worked at Northeast Utilities full-time

    Pros

Great opportunities for young professionals. Great medical benefits. Opportunities for growth. Much better conditions if you are union.

    Cons

Limited growth. Overtime continues to be reduced or eliminated. Office culture is challenging, at best.

    Advice to Management

Try not to shed too much talent, it may come back and bite you where it hurts.

  10. Good people, Great benefits, post-merger changes are taking a toll on employees and organizational culture.

I have been working at Northeast Utilities full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

benefts are very good - comprehensive with reasonable employee contributions; stock price is climbing; Employees are good people generally helpful and supportive of eachother and focused on getting the job done well.

    Cons

Post merger cultural changes are taking a toll - a lot more "head down, do what your told" and less critical, creative dialogue to solve and improve. Management, particularly Director and above, is much more dictatorial and far less approachable than in the old NU where the feeling was much more of a partnership toward shared objectives. Work life balance, while strained in the old NU, is now almost nonexistent with little flexibility in most business areas

    Advice to Management

consider alternative work locations, alternative work schedules, reinstating storm pay for non-managerial salaried employees, and returning the option to buy and sell vacation time.

    Pros

The legacy NU folks are some of the most hardworking people I've ever know.

    Cons

NStar is crushing the life out if the company.

    Advice to Management

    Why bother? They won't listen.
