Management was poor, but the people were amazing

Student Manager (Former Employee)
DeKalb, IL

I worked at Northern Illinois University part-time for more than 3 years

ProsMajority of people are willing to help you until you get on your feet. If you're a student, their flexible schedules make it easy to work around classes.

ConsAbsolute lack of standardization. Almost zero training process and they expect you to be 100% engaged without instructions.

Advice to Senior ManagementInteract with your workers more.

Fantastic Benefits, limited growth potential

IT Technical Associate (Current Employee)
DeKalb, IL

I have been working at Northern Illinois University full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThis is a wonderful, comfortable place to work. The ITS department is located in a beautiful building and the university offers benefits that are almost impossible to beat. A 37.5 hour work week, five weeks of vacation, tuition waivers etc.

ConsThe main issue is that it's such a great place to work that there is pretty limited growth potential. Management is typically 45+ since people usually come to the university and stay for the rest of their careers. It's really a choice between comfort and work-life balance and pay/opportunity.

They are considerate of work/life balance.

ConsNo benefits or pay raises after working there for a long period of time
Not all University jobs are work-study eligible

Solid stepping stone to bigger and better opportunities

Graduate Research Assistant (Current Employee)
DeKalb, IL

I have been working at Northern Illinois University as a contractor for more than 3 years

ProsFaculty are well connected. I would travel with faculty to conferences and was presented with rewarding networking opportunities. Faculty are also strongly motivated to bring in grants as to fund their students.

ConsSome of the campus facilities are in dire need of an upgrade. Most of the improvements are from grant funding, which is few and far between.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe department would benefit from a communal space reserved for graduate students. If graduate students had some sort of lounge where they could mingle and socialize, this would lead to future collaborations that could potentially result in more funding brought to the university. Plus, such space could serve as an oasis where students could recharge and work more productively.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Depends on the Department

Research Assistant (Former Employee)
DeKalb, IL

I worked at Northern Illinois University full-time for more than a year

ProsVacation time and holiday time off a plus. Large office, good colleagues for the most part. Tuition reimbursement a big plus.

ConsPublic University, meaning low chance of raise. Budget cuts create uncertainty for keeping job. A lot of older buildings that need remodeling.
