    Pros

Stable organization. Owned by Berkshire Hathaway Energy. On site gym. Good location. Free parking. Decent work environment - cubicles, offices, break rooms.

    Cons

Agree with other reviewers that the general mentality is to manage by fear, which is incredibly demotivating. Morale is as low as I've seen and management seems to not notice or care. Management has created an environment of blame, criticism, finding fault wherever they can and outwardly calling people on them. It's embarrassing how openly mistakes are discussed and rehashed. High pressure environment, high accountability, which should be a good thing but isn't when you constantly have to worry about the repercussions of making a mistake.

    Advice to Management

Focus on your employees. Give positive feedback (virtually non existent currently). Take some leadership classes! The days of managing by fear or times of the past.

    Pros

The people within each of the departments and out in the field are genuinely good people. It is just a shame that their full talents are not always realized by management

    Cons

The management style is one that I have never experienced before in almost 30 years of working in a professional environment. No matter how much experience an employee can bring to the table their suggestions for improving processes or procedures will at best be ignored. Mentoring and development of new employees by management is non-existent, and the only review a person is likely to get is being told that they have made a mistake in a process.

    Advice to Management

If upper management would take the time to treat the employees with a bit of respect, and as valued members of the company, that would go a long way.

As we are told by management, you should be glad you have a job. Otherwise, None.None None None None None None None None None None

    Cons

NO employee feedback or suggestions welcomed whatsoever. It ALL about management. Their assigned parking spots, trips to the Final Four, huge spending sprees ect. If you are not a higher up you are treated like dirt.

    Pros

Great place to work for lazy employees! Good benefits, however pay is under average with similar positions at other companies. A lot of freedom and limited supervision. A few good apples make this company from being rated lower. There are many opportunities for people willing to pursue them. A lot of people leaving in the next 10 years open things up.

    Cons

A few up and coming individuals give company some potential for the future. Current management is top heavy with a older generation and seeks limited risk and organization.

Organization and efficiency are the lowest priority and most of the burden ends up on the employees. Shows limited appreciation for its employees and some with great potential do not receive the support they seek.

    Advice to Management

    Appreciate and respect your employees.

    Pros

They aren't moving to Houston and the work force is old and retiring

    Cons

Northern is completely focused on their customers which should be a good thing, but in this case that only applies to external customers and not their internal customers who are the employees. Employees are continuously bombarded by procedure after procedure and silly rule after silly rule while having to CYA at every turn. When mistakes are made (which is often due to lack of automation) then it's a mad rush to judgement as everyone scrambles to pin the blame.

Progress is discouraged as the goal is not to improve the product or the process, but to save money at all costs and just throw more procedures and people at the problem. From top to bottom things are very territorial and each department is in their own silo. This leads to crippling disorganization and employee apathy as instead of having employees focus on their specific strengths, work is distributed to multiple employees with no one able to take ownership of the issues. Instead people are continually trying to pass the buck so that when a problem arises they can't be blamed and punished.

    Advice to Management

Trust your employees and loosen the reins. People's creativity is being completely smothered and the company is quickly falling behind because of it.

Times are changing and people are no longer willing to be held down for 30 or 40 years just in the name of keeping their jobs. When they feel marginalized and are treated like children they quickly tune out and do nothing but come to work and collect a paycheck.

    Pros

There are a lot of great, capable people that work at Northern. Benefits are great. Pay is okay. Year end bonuses are a plus. Very stable company.

    Cons

I've never worked in a more negative and diseased environment. The great people that work for this company shake in their boots when management is around and consistently gripe about how awful upper management is. It's really sad to see people who have worked at a company for 20-30 years openly state how disappointed they are with their jobs and continue to slave for this company.

Innovation isn't welcomed and is frowned upon. Often when you would present an idea that would reduce workload and streamline procedures and operations, you'd be told work had to be completed following their rules and would often pile on extra steps onto an already burden system.

The place is just broken and isn't ever going to be fixed under the current management system.

    Advice to Management

Get out and actually visit the people in the field and observe what they have to endure on a day to day basis versus sitting in your corporate office making judgments and new rules to follow. You are seriously making work more difficult for your workforce.

    Pros

The pay and benefits are comparable to those in the industry. Most of the employees are great to work with and become like family. For many years, this was a wonderful place to work.

    Cons

Management seems to be concerned with making examples of employees and their mistakes instead of encouraging an environment that fosters productivity. This seems ironic, in that they, like everyone else, make as many mistakes as anyone. Examples that come to mind: I observed and participated in employees being disciplined for driving accidents while an UPPER manager's accident went unmentioned (and most likely unpunished)! On another occasion, a local manager ran into a gate, and that accident was never officially reported or disciplinary action taken! In other words, consequences are not delivered in a fair manner. This is discouraging to employees observing and dealing with the issues often bequeathed them by employees that have been promoted into management or have left the company!

Managers with line authority direct by fear and intimidation. Promotions and career appear to be based on relationships and conformity rather than ability. If you voice ideas, concerns or constructive criticism you can forget about a promotion (and maybe your job).

There is extreme pressure for employees to contribute to PACs and charities they deem deserving even though you may have your own. In my opinion, this is for their public appearance as opposed to a legitimate belief in the charity.

    Advice to Management

I am not sure they are open to advice. The belief in one's infallibility does not lend itself to accepting advice.

    Pros

The grass roots field and management employees are engaging and helpful. Benefits are middle average among their peers. Salaries, time off , and other compensation are designed to fall into the 70th percentile of peer companies.

    Cons

The company is increasingly using automation and marketing practices to maximize income and reduce staffing of field employees. Automation in itself is a useful tool, but shouldn't be used as a tool to dilute jobs in a critically hazardous industry.

    Advice to Management

Be more receptive of recommendations from core employees and middle-management . IT and Engineering come in varying degrees of competencies.

    Pros

The company isn't going anywhere physically or in the industry.

    Cons

Too many to list. The amount of procedures is staggering and does nothing but give higher ups a false sense of security. Far too dependent on a select individuals and completely unprepared when something doesn't go as expected.

    Advice to Management

Trust your people! Company is so fully ingrained in a CYA mentality that people don't even bother to innovate as they know changes will not only not happen, but that they'll be seen as disobedient for daring to question existing policies. This is old time management at it's finest where the goals is to get head nodding zombies who do as they're told regardless of if it's makes sense.
