It was a good company, worked at the Canal Building. Wish I was learning more. Mostly administrative work.

I have been working at Northern Trust full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great benefits, good salary, good entry level job for college graduate. This is a great Chicago company and offers many opportunities for growth within the company.

    Cons

Poor training. It felt like I had to learn everything myself, which is not terrible, but when there are deadlines to be met and you are given most the work, it is hard to keep up and maintain a steady work pace, while minimizing errors.

I worked at Northern Trust full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Standard work hours great for working moms.

    Cons

Management needs to move to the nursing homes that await them. No innovation whatsoever at this organization. Get ready to push paper.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Northern Trust full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Middle managers are given a great deal of responsibility and the opportunity to have a material impact on the entire division. Northern Trust benefits are competitive.

    Cons

Company sells guarantees to clients that the company is not equipped to deliver. Further, they do not provide the resources or support to implement long term solutions. Upper management is relatively disconnected from middle management and staff, and the only transparency they have of the business is that which is pushed to them from the lower level. Management seems genuinely unconcerned with the shortfalls of the business and tends to only be reactive in strategy.

Certain teams work low hours and low stress while others are stretched entirely too thin. Compensation starts out competitive, but you will never make big jumps internally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit stretching your teams so thin and focus on high value clients. Build out the platform to handle new targets and stop selling a la carte products that cannot be managed in a scalable fashion. Identify your key risk team members and make sure they are happy to avoid turnover.

I have been working at Northern Trust

    Pros

Northern trust has a well established business model and reputation. Working for this company allows you to develop business skills applicable to any Fortune 500 company.

    Cons

large age gap, paid under market value, change management needs improvement

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on your young employees and narrow the age gap. A decreased age gap will benefit annual expenses, improve change management and create a more conducive work environment. Reward your young employees with cash incentives, especially the high performers (they are paid under market value and will leave), and give them more opportunities to develop.

Great place to start out your career - but don't stay long. They don't give pay raises or compensate well.

I have been working at Northern Trust

    Pros

Nice work/life balance. Good place to start when you are right out of college.

    Cons

Poorly compensated. No career growth, no leadership. A good place to start when you are younger, but do not stay long.

I have been working at Northern Trust

    Pros

corporate culture is positive, family oriented, safe/stable job, benefits are decent

    Cons

Very few people get pay raises, only way to move up is to entirely change jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote based on merit, not based on a "quota" for promotions. This leads to unqualified people being promoted just to fill the space, and qualified people not getting promoted due to no openings at the promotional level.

I worked at Northern Trust full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The company has a great middle office department, which handles back office operations tasks. The team is supported by excellent management knowledgeable partners. IT provides an excellent learning environment for new college grads.

    Cons

There are very limited opportunities to advance in back office operations. Though it is a great foot in the door to move onto other roles within the organization.
