I have been working at Northwestern Memorial Hospital full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Working for such a well known hospital is great for your resume and they love hiring new grads. There are also many practice policies and procedures in place that help to guide safe and effective care of patients. My coworkers are incredible strong, intelligent people that all work very well together as a team.

    Cons

Hourly pay is much lower than most hospitals in the are for RNs. The leadership does not seem to care much about the nurses they work for and rules for scheduling, etc are ridiculously complicated and overly strict. Management can often be condescending on my unit, and I have heard my manager tell employees that we are easily replaced because the unit receives hundreds of applications a month. It is also fairly difficult to get reimbursed for continuing education and there is not a lot of encouragement to make nursing a career rather than just a job you go to.

    Pros

Great teamwork on the unit, great experience

    Cons

Compensation is not great, cutbacks affecting everyone, management does not listen, very low tuition reimbursement, no compensation for certifications, doctors can be difficult to work with, parking is very expensive, very high turn-over rate among nurses

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on appreciating and trying to keep your employees

    Pros

I've seen these talented people perform miracles.

    Cons

At the upper acquisition level, it's not bad. Almost everywhere else it was like a poor fire drill.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring a stronger CEO or a Vice Chair but all the pieces have to fit.

    Pros

The professional and caring atmosphere is definitely a plus. Northwestern Medicine offers is fair and they offer their employees so very much.

    Cons

Being a hard working - dedicated person, I give 150% to my job. It makes life challenging when you have a family and outside responsibilities. However, time management is extremely important. The benefits of learning new, challenging things makes working at NMH a rewarding experience.

I have been working at Northwestern Memorial Hospital full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good experience, wide range of patients

    Cons

Low tuition reimbursement, high nurse to patient ratios, low budget, management does not engage in improving work conditions, high turnover with staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to employees who are on the front-line of services if you want preeminent quality of care to your patients. It becomes a struggle to provide excellent care when we are bombarded with high ratios and little help. There always seems to be inadequate staffing, even from the float pools.

    Pros

Great coworkers - dedicated, friendly staff. Good location, easily accessible by public transportation. Great health insurance.

    Cons

Upper management is out of touch and consumed by the bottom line. Sweeping organizational changes are made with no consideration for the staff and with very little communication.
