    Pros

Large stage company. They have never laid off an employee in 158 years. 40 hour work weeks are encouraged. Taking vacations is encouraged. Very good benefits compared to the industry including a 401k match and lump sum retirement plan. The benefits have been reduced several time over my 7 years at the company. I expect they will continue to chip away at them over time, but they are still above average for the industry. Lots of opportunity to move around within the company and try different jobs. And who can complain about the free lunches every day.

    Cons

Things move slowly, lots of process, takes a long time to get things done. Be prepared to fill out a form to do just about anything. Change in technology and industry take a while to filter through Northwestern Mutual.

    Advice to Management

Try to keep up with the times so the business isn't passed by. There is a lot of unnecessary process which could be removed.

    Pros

Employee focused company that cares deeply about their staff. Free lunch offered to all employees including contract staff that in a large cafeteria.

    Cons

On occasion, there is a lack of communication between departments where decisions are made in one area that has an effect in another area.

    Pros

Very collaborative workplace with extensive interaction with senior management. Broad work experience in all real estate product types and geographies. Both fixed income and equity investing provides exposure to JV development. Great work-life balance, benefits, and quality of life.

    Cons

Probably below industry-average compensation, however this is partially offset by great health and retirement benefits

    Pros

    Free lunch
    Great knowledge base
    Beautiful campuses

    Cons

So many employees it's easy to feel like you're just a number
Many IT positions are contracted with little promise of converting to an employee

    Advice to Management

Share more with your contractors about the opportunity of being converted to an employee.

    Pros

Job security for permanent employees very good; benefits still very competitive. Lot of opportunity since there are so many organizations, teams, and types of skills needed. On-site facilities are always clean, safe, and supportive with fitness center, health center, cafeteria, etc.

    Cons

General lack of talent/skills from leadership; focus has been on farming out work and receiving status updates, etc. as opposed to development and inspiring/motivating workers. Some areas still very "old school" and based more around reputation/rapport and knowledge (hoarding) than performance

    Advice to Management

Put your energy into adapting and learning how to lead without defined knowledge.

    Pros

Working for a Wealth Management Advisor requires that you find a solution on your own. The job is so unique because client needs vary widely. While there are resources available to you, you have to know how to utilize them. If you are a proactive problem solver and don't require guidance for day-to-day activities, being an Associate to a Wealth Management Advisor will be a good fit.

    Cons

There really is no formal training program. Each Wealth Management Advisor has a unique practice as well as a unique personality. So in order for a working relationship to be successful, you really have to get along with the person you are working for. Depending on how advanced the practice is, the learning curve can be cumbersome.

    Advice to Management

Create a more structured training program for Associates and those individuals who support the Advisors.

    Pros

Awesome free lunch that offers the opportunity to network with people from all over the organization, tons of groups to join, co-workers are always friendly and wiling to help you

    Cons

Somewhat conservative culture remains and technology is often a common problem -- despite efforts to change both. In the future, I'm sure the company will overcome these two obstacles.

    Pros

Tremendous training. Learn how the business world works. Get experience in sales. Learn how to conduct yourself on the phone. Learn what it means to work hard in a business setting. If you view it as an internship it can be quite helpful.

    Cons

You are asked and expected way too much and managers put way too much pressure on you. You have to contact everyone you have ever met, especially your close friends and family, and ask them awkward questions about their finances. You are obligated to bring "veteran" reps with you to all of your meetings and in some cases that rep is under experienced, makes your friend feel uncomfortable, forces them into something they do not want to do and something that does not make sense for them or their family. Some reps do not act in the best interest of your clients, they are just looking to make money off of them. One rep ruined relationships with some of my friends that no longer speak to me because of it. Once you have exhausted all of your contacts your time is basically over. The scam is basically set up so that veteran reps do not have to do any cold calling to find new clients, they just hire new reps that don't know any better that set meetings up with people that trust them, and the veteran reps gain new clients especially after you leave. There is about a 2% chance of you making it past 3 years. Once you leave and your friends cancel their policies down the road you end up having to pay back everything you made.

    Advice to Management

Stop the scam. Stop taking advantage of younger/new reps to gain more business.

    Pros

Great professional culture and atmosphere, great buildings and facilities, 24 hour workout room access, and free lunch!

    Cons

There could be a little bit more diversity in management and upper officials in the company.

    Advice to Management

    More diversity please.
