I worked at Northwestern University part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

It was a great way to connect with professors. I was able to get some hands on experience and learn research was my area of interest. I appreciated the interest in my academic and professional development.

    Cons

Since it was a work-study position pay was not fantastic, but more than adequate for the flexibility it allowed during the school year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I really appreciate all the time spent on developing my skills and the one-on-one training time. I still use all these skills today in my current job.

I have been working at Northwestern University full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I love the college campus environment. Actually, I love even more the educational environment and NU has that and more. The Evanston campus is beautiful. The people who work here are wonderful and I never know when I'll be talking with someone who is just brilliant in their field. My department supports me in all my learning activities and I'm treated very well. I'm respected and valued as a member of the team which after years in corporate I'm glad to have this back in my life. I love the work/life balance but I also like the fact that my leadership team will ask me to contribute at a higher level if needed and then reward me for doing so. Benefits are very good here. Sick time, vacation time, Personal Floating Holidays plus a generous schedule of holidays off all make for a wonderful work experience for me. You don't get this kind of stuff in corporate America anymore.

    Cons

There is a strong sense of entitlement among some staff. They have worked at NU for many years and feel they are owed. Not sure what that is but I do get tired of hearing them complain. They can make it challenging for those who are willing to go above and beyond and who have lost jobs due to outsourcing. Parking can be truly a nightmare and promises to only get worse. Other than that I have no complaints.

While I liked my office, I felt that the university overall did not value its employees.

I worked at Northwestern University full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Low stress environment, world renowned university. It is a beautiful campus with a good reputation which helped me get my next job.

    Cons

HR is atrocious, terrible salary, horrible benefits. During an HR presentation the head of HR told us that in order to get better maternity leave and childcare options, it would need to be federally mandated. They just weren't very concerned with being a school that values its staff. I knew about this from speaking with academic employees as well. We were all dealing with sub par working compensation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make the environment more attractive to keeping and maintaining employees.

    Pros

    Beautiful campus.
The environment here is collaborative, and your experience can be positive if you choose a correct advisor.
It is located in the nicest place around Chicago.

    Cons

Obviously, the education quality here is poor. It is even poorer than my undergraduate institute, which is a state-university.
Career service is poor. The career website is full of false information.
The university has only a few strong programs. Therefore, it is not a right place for interdisciplinary fields.
