    Pros

NIBR is an excellent place to work for scientists and clinicians interested in developing new treatments. It offers a nice combination of scientific freedom and resources. In general the managers are scientists and are committed to their mission. The work life balance is excellent.

    Cons

Novartis is a large company with some processes that are slow and can drive anyone crazy. There are also some internal politics that can be hard to navigate.

I worked at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits, pay, and resources. Good work/life balance with flex-time. A really great place to do science and great collegian atmosphere. A good amount of support for moving in different career directions and trying new technologies.

    Cons

Some top management is not clear on what keeps the ship afloat and will soon be replaced I'm sure. Other top management are true leaders and appreciate the contributions of each employee.

    Advice to Management

Get more involved with learning the details of how drug discovery is truly done. It's not just good ideas and project leadership.

I have been working at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The atmosphere is really academic in some departments. The pay is high compared to surrounding biotechs. Most people are very smart and very experienced.

    Cons

Negotiate your salary well because raises are very low and over time you lose that competitive salary. The work ethic is very lax compered to biotech and it will be hard to stay on top with everyone only working 5hrs a day. Management are not available to associates and project information is hidden from the lower levels.

    Advice to Management

If you want to retain talent then you need to give better raises. You should calibrate with other companies in Cambridge. The company needs to be more open to associates with respect to projects.
