    Pros

Good salary and training as well as bonuses. Recent events caused management and corporate to finally listen to the employees.

    Cons

Though communication is still not the greatest from employee to manager. Promote employee safety very highly at work but in the winter they force you to take a vacation day if the weather is so bad that the area is under a state of emergency and you are unable to drive in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to concerns of employees no matter how small to avoid aggravation and annoyance

    Disconnected Senior Management

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Great Co Workers in the Regions
    Growth Oriented

    Cons

Senior management in the Global HQs is completely disconnected from the Regions. Politics reign supreme and it's not what you do or what you know but rather who you know. Many decision makers not familiar with how the business operates or the true market dynamics. This leads to top down decisions that hurt employees and customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get over over yourselves and invest in your people rather than yourselves. The Company will be more successful.

Oswego plant was a good place to work

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Can-do culture, good relations between operators and engineers.
Capital being invested, decent maintenance of equipment (there's always more that can be done, but more recent experience has shown me how well Novelis did)

    Cons

Corporate culture/managers from the Atlanta HQ was affecting the culture at the Oswego plant negatively.
Bonus structure is pretty poor compared to similarly sized corporations

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't mess with a good thing - the Oswego culture has survived several economic downturns because the employees there are truly a team.

Also, just because someone brings up potential issues with a plan doesn't mean they're being negative - they're probably looking to protect the plant and fix problems before they arrive.

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee  in  Atlanta, GA
Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Atlanta, GA

    Pros

Creating an environment rich in opportunity to conduct a Harvard case study in how to destroy employee trust, loyalty and eventually productivity.
Financial results illustrate how to drive results through eliminating retiree benefits, with the impact serving as a direct reward to Senior Leadership in the form of amended Long Term incentive bonuses.

    Cons

Centralized management structure destroying cultural value.
Leadership team unable and unwilling to bring balance to dictatorial management process driven by Mr. Martens.
Lack of integrity characterized by misleading and incorrect statements made regarding the elimination of retiree health care.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to and take meaningful action in response to the message driven home by the Oswego employees.

    Pros

Good people, overall. Amazingly still have some solid performers.

    Cons

Despite a tremendous market that is developing this company will find a way to underperform.
Have financed large parts of their expansions by slashing benefit packages.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No point. You don't listen and have no integrity.

Your publicly filed financial statements are scary.

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

    Great co-workers
    Concern for the community

    Cons

stuck in your pay scale which isn't equal to responsibilities - exceed goals and you might get a 3% increase, if you're lucky - and don't get used to that bonus as management will find a way to get around paying it out
    high deductible insurance
corporate management only concerned for themselves and not the people

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employees do not like the change in direction management is taking the company - without the employees, you wouldn't have a company. Show your concern and appreciation for them and the company will be more successful than you can ever imagine. Continue with your own personal agenda and the company will continue to decline.

Former Employee - Fork Lift Operator  in  Oswego, NY
Former Employee - Fork Lift Operator in Oswego, NY

    Pros

The co-workers are great, the company is extremely safety oriented. They also have great bonuses for no accidents. There are definitely a lot of good aspects.

    Cons

Management and the over-use of temps. The management seem to listen more to people who have never done the job and seldom listen to the people who work there day in and day out.
They should also hire temps before outside sources since the temp is trained, know what is going on, and is familiar with the plant. This company is more of who know thank what you know. Also, just because you don't have a degree doesn't mean you are not a good, hard worker. A piece of paper does not mean you have common sense and can handle the rigors of machine operations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Everyone is there to make a living, stop making the job so stressful and it's wrong how you string temps along.
