This is no longer the Novell I joined.

Technical Support Engineer (Current Employee)
Rotterdam (Netherlands)

I have been working at Novell

ProsMost colleagues are competent, hardworking, proud of their work, and fun.

ConsTop-heavy management structure; unclear and complicated marketing strategy; product development resources reduced far too drastically in the past two years.

Advice to Senior ManagementSeriously examine the state of the brand; do what Novell does best rather than trying to follow other, bigger companies

Novell will not be in business for long.

Backline Support Engineer (Current Employee)
Provo, UT

I have been working at Novell

ProsFlexible schedule, good pay and benefits

ConsNo opportunities for advancement. Incompetent executive management.

Advice to Senior ManagementInfrastructure is a commodity. Collaboration is the killer app. Customers are not happy that support and development are outsourced outside the U.S.

Read the fine print

Technology Sales Specialist (Former Employee)
Dallas, TX

I worked at Novell

ProsGood technology, great friendships if you like tech its the place to be.

ConsHighly political. If you are on the West Coast, brace yourself for working with an East Coast company. An Old White Boys network that was sexist to say the least. Really bad managers are allowed to stay because of who they know in the company and this forces good employees out. Not uncommon for employees to be dressed down by management in front of their peers. Truly the worst, most unprofessional company I've ever worked for. I left a few years ago and the memory of it still haunts me.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe fair and treat employees as you would want to be treated

Novell has some excellent potential to re-invent itself, but is slow to do so.

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee)
Provo, UT

I have been working at Novell

ProsI'm well compensated and feel appreciated for the quality and quantity of work that I do.

ConsNot enough growth opportunities, and not enough technical expertise and will-power to change.

Advice to Senior ManagementPut some skin in the game. Let's see some executives that are willing to stick it out and not just use Novell as a stepping stone. Executives should be financially rewarded for making the company more profitable, not just for reaching easy, self-imposed goals., and not just for laying people off. Executives need to find some focus.

Good people, Plan is to Get Return on Private Investment, NOT Growth

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Novell full-time for more than 8 years

ProsI loved the people in Provo and Seattle, they were great to work with. Benefits are great including the gym, cafeteria, outdoor facilities like basketball court and volleyball court. Great vacation benefits, decent healthcare, ok 401k

ConsOnly a few people know how to make a difference and they're held back by a financial model that worked at Attachmate to get return on investor purchase. If the company doesn't grow and they milk the investment, they get what they want. When that dries up, they'll buy another company. SUSE and NetIQ may be an exception but they are constrained by the same financial structure: strict hiring processes, very little R&D, and little focus on the future.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet the GMs make decisions about hiring and firing. Consider investing more in existing products and businesses to try to turn things around rather than just milking the cow. A death spiral is no fun to be a part of.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Novell

ProsNovell has great technologies and solutions, as employee have a high standards benefits like medical insurance

Consvery unstable working environment, not only looking for your job done, but also internal competition that contributes to destroy the company

Advice to Senior Managementtry to create a better friendly and teamwork environment. You will not get prospect's attention if you act like your biggest and strongest competitors, neither win market share. You need to make better, small, different and nice. Need a long term investments, specially at Brazil where the reputation needs to be improved.

Dying a slow death

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Novell full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat peers and lower management, very flexible workplace.

ConsMediocre middle management. Horrible upper management. Current C-levels are just ordinary C-levels with no passion for the business or the brands. Yet another round of deep cuts. Benefits get worse and worse every year. Not enough resources (people) to cover the business so the few remaining people are more and more overworked.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit.
