Advice to Senior ManagementDecisions are obvioulsy made with the bottom line in mind...maybe make it not so evident to the employees who feel like second fiddle

As the economy improves, look elsewhere.

    Configuration Engineer (Former Employee)
    Tualatin, OR

ProsIt's a job. There are a handful of helpful people there. The rest just keep their head down and don't go too far out of their way to help others.

ConsCompany culture is bland and the products are not very inspiring - or reliable for that matter. The management staff seems to be out of touch with any of the people that actually do the work.

Very valuable experience for the graduate student

    Process Development Engineer (Current Employee)
    Tualatin, OR

ProsNovellus is the leader in its field. Many employers at Novellus are well known and respected academically and professionally. Novellus encourages innovation, patents, and publications from its employers.

ConsWorking at Novellus can be hard sometimes, which provides a challenge for balancing work and personal life. Stress also creeps in to the work placeas deadlines have to be meant.

You are an expendable commodity at Novellus

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Tualatin, OR

    ProsReasonable pay
Traditional benefits though I don't know if that is still true,
Year end bonus if company exceeded goals.

ConsEngineering and management are employees, most others are contractors that aren't eligible for benefits or bonus. Absolutely no consideration for work life balance. They demanded 60 hours/week for 8 or 9 weeks out of every 13 week production cycle. There were constant layoffs and hiring, you could never feel secure. Rick Hill has disdain for operating in the USA. He has said in interviews he wants to move operations overseas.

Advice to Senior ManagementNovellus should be bought out by another company.

You work very long hours on interesting designs with zero personal time available.

    Senior Mechanical Engineer (Former Employee)
    Tualatin, OR

ProsVery interesting and complex mechanical engineering/design ProE CAD work on their products. Their systems are large semiconductor capital equipment, so there is a variety of systems that an engineer works on or is exposed to.

ConsRidiculous schedule demands, requiring long hours, that must be might which sacrifices your personal life time. Even though you are a salary employee, Novellus does not support comp time off for the extra hours you put in. The company runs lean, so there are usually no additional resources to support an extremely aggressive schedule; therefore it is generally left up to one individual to meet these goals.

The atmosphere is very personal among coworkers.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Tualatin, OR

ProsNovellus offers plenty of room for growth if you have the desire to move up.

ConsManufacturing work long hours and days.
Management is slow to recognize and promote talented employees, many top talent end up leaving.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry harder to recognize and compensate top talent fairly so that they will stay at Novellus.

    You will go unappreciated

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Tualatin, OR

Pros- if you can survive here, you can survive anywhere
    - your peers are awesome and will be there to support you
    - very fast paced

Cons- Semiconductor capital equipment industry is extremely cyclical, and the ebb and flow of the business will affect your job workload
    - long hours and little appreciation from your superiors
    - high turnover rate
    - nepotism

Advice to Senior Management- take advantage of the talent and enthusiasm of some of your employees; empower them and let them do their thing! there's so much untapped potential here...
    - come into the 21st century please... management style is still very old school
    - competitive salaries would be nice

    Sink ing

    Field (Current Employee)
    Tualatin, OR

ProsPays rent. People need jobs in this economy. Believe it or not, there are a few honest people working there with intergrity. A few. Short drive. Green to blue coming?

ConsHorrible management. Forced to use up all your paid time off, actually more PTO in a quarter than you earn all year. and PTO is used for sick days. Pay. CEO is only worried about selling the company so that he can retire with a lump sum. Backstabbers, can't trust anyone. Everyone is out for themselves. Management refuses to say no to a certain customer for anything. Healthcare cost just doubled, while benifit and coverage declined. Not allowed to have a work life balance. Customers manage us more than our management does. Most decisions regarding personnel are based on whether they like the person, not based on their work performance. Promotions etc are based on if you are buddy buddy with management. Solar world still hiring?

Advice to Senior ManagementIf most of the reviews say to fire a certain person, are the right?

    Great benefits package

    Electrical Engineer I (Former Employee)
    Tualatin, OR

ProsThe benefits package offered by Novellus is superb. The insurance packages are cheap (approx. $10/paycheck) and coverage is one of the best I've seen. Also, they offer profit sharing when their revenue hits target. Every five years, they offer a 5-week sabbatical on top of the normal vacation time, which is almost unheard of in Silicon Valley.

ConsIt doesn't not seem to be a very dynamic company. Career growth inside the company seems limited. The capital equipment business is very cyclical and thus makes job security a question.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to develop more capable managers and cut down on the office politics starting all the way from group manager level up to the VP's.
