ProsPay for heath care for employee (used to be for entire family), Stock purchase plan, 401k (but no matching), nice building and work environment.

ConsMany of the things that we used to have for free (perks) are going away. Used to give reimburse $200 per year for sports equipment, all you can eat snacks and free soda maching, international flying business or first class, all gone now. Thanks Obamacare (medical device tax on REVENUE)

Advice to Senior ManagementGet some better leaders in place. Typical of management everybody is just looking to CYA. Nobody makes any tough decisions so things take forever to get done. Get some leadership and management with some balls. Seems like people would rather not get something done and make a decision than to make something happen. You should punish management that spend 50% or more of their days in meeting endlessly takling about things.

ProsTechnology is great. If you like medical device development, you'll have lots of interesting and challenging problems to solve.

ConsOverworked, underpaid. Way too many hours. Lots of wasted effort.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't try to make a team of stars. Rather create a solid team where everybody has a specific job, not do-it-all people.

ProsGreat culture in a great industry (not to mention in a great city)!

The management and employees truly care about improving peoples' lives. They always put the patient first and insist on high levels of performance.

This is an incredibly intelligent and hard working group of people dedicated to changing surgery and improving patient outcomes. This company creates some truly innovative and industry changing products that every employee can be proud of.

Being around ambitious and altruistic people is invigorating and makes you want to work harder to make the world a better place.

They never lose site of their goals and sense of purpose: improve spine surgery.

Lot's of opportunities to get involved with philanthropy and community outreach.

ConsLong hours are required of certain groups. This is not the place for you if you cannot handle high pressure and high performance demands.

As the company grows some of the culture is being lost. Bureaucracy is creeping into the company and the nimble, fast paced, start-up mentality is diminishing.

Only certain charities (that further the companies interests) are supported by management.

There is little room for political dissent if you want to further your career here.

Some people can take the culture a little too far and fail to realize their own shortcomings. At times, the culture can be used as a weapon and can form cliques.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you want to continue to grow and lead the industry in innovative and high quality products you have to reinvest in your company, your physical assets, and your people. Improve your internal systems and processes, reduce and disincentivize bureaucracy, and keep your share-owners (employees) as your number one priority. Keep an outside-in approach vs. an inside-out approach: what do your customers need and how do we satisfy them vs. this is what we have so take it or leave it.

Current Employee – been working at NuVasive full-time for more than a year

Proshighly innovative and rapidly expanding company, strong and aggressive leadership, experienced and intelligent workforce, pure spine play allows for good focus and prioritization, nice facilities and accomodations (gym with personal trainers, snack cabinet, on-site cafeteria, computer, phone, etc.), great culture, plenty of opportunities to get involved

Consfast-paced environment that leads to burn-out, recognition is inconsistent, big expectations relative to compensation, culture is eroding as company grows in size, road to promotion not as clear

Advice to Senior Managementfind a better approach to performance-based compensation to keep workers engaged

ProsEncouraged to grow and stretch beyond skill sets; good emphasis on development and further training; enthusiastic culture; philanthropic programs; rewards for successes; on site lab and machine shop; opportunities to work cross-departmentally on projects.

ConsNot a company for those who want to work only 9-5 /40 hours a week but NuVasive is a company for those who want challenges and opportunities to innovate.

ProsGood products, quick customs turnaround.

ConsLack of sets causing constant flight holds. Late set arrival can cause hospitals to get angry.

Advice to Senior ManagementBuild more sets and promote reps when they deserve it to stop them from leaving the company. Address your unrealistic sales quotas.

Former Employee – worked at NuVasive full-time for more than 3 years

Pros-Snack cabinets with junk food.
-Nice gym and cafeteria on site.
-Great location.
-Cell phone (Blackberry also a con)

ConsBiggest egos I've ever had to deal with! Pompous management that bases skill level off years of industry experience instead of actual knowledge. I saw a lot of extremely smart people shoved into a corner with no raise and no promotion because they weren't in the kiss-arse group, and didn't work every Sunday.
You WILL work 60+ hours a week, and you will NOT be compensated for it. The culture is just another management tool like the A-Player attributes to keep you scared of losing your job. They have too many chiefs and not enough indians.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet off your high horse! Promote engineers instead of just promoting execs.
If your review doesn't even come close to your employee's self-review, it means there is a communication problem... not that the employee is mental.

ProsTerrific opportunity to work in leading edge medical technology. People are genuine and dedicated.

ConsI was employed as a student and was let go prematurely because of a budget issue. In a company this large, a budget issue should be managed without sacrificing human capital, if at all possible (but three positions had to be eliminated to correct a deficit from the previous year.)

Advice to Senior ManagementI enjoyed my time at NuVasive and would recommend them to someone as an excellent place to work. I am disappointed that my time there was cut short.
