I worked at NuVasive full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I did enjoy the people that I worked alongside in the Customer Service department located in Memphis. However, if you were not part of a small group of brown-nosing employees, that never questioned anything and acted like complete sheep .... you were either buried in a position without promotion, or fired.

    Cons

Those in management (in Memphis) would fire you if they felt threatened by your ideas, intelligence or your innovative approach to solving problems. If the solutions didn't come from those already in power, they were not considered and you were thought of as "being a problem". I worked for three women directly ... I worked 50-plus hours a week for two-and-a-half years, and was fired after two-and-a-half years because I was working unwarranted overtime. MIND YOU - that your time cards were approved electronically every pay period — and mine were the exact same (number of hours) the entire time. The real reason was that I was pushing for a much-deserved promotion and the women in charge felt threatened ... but it could be worse — I could still be there!!

I have been working at NuVasive

    Pros

This is Nuvasive's mantra and it seems to be working for them. The company started in 1999 and is on pace to hit over $750M in revenue this year making them the 3rd largest med device company in the global spine market. Based on the large corporations they compete against this is pretty remarkable.
It doesn't look like things are slowing down as their stock hit a 52 week high just last week. Lots of companies claim to have a "great culture" but Nuvasive really goes above and beyond to protect their "billion dollar, start-up" vibe. - Fall Festivals, beer gardens, Cheetah Ball, free fruit & vending machines in the break rooms, etc.
Also, with the size of the company (under 2,000 EEs) there is easy access to leadership and the ability to affect change. Although the size of the company is smaller they still have a global presence and remain competitive with compensation and benefits.

    Cons

This is one of those make a negative a positive comment . . . they're looking for positive, smart, passionate problem-solvers to work here. If you're talented and are looking for other talented people to push you to get better this is the place for you. They require a lot from you but at the same time they give a lot back. Think of it as a basketball team competing for a championship - you're going to have to work hard personally to get to the playoffs but you're going to also need other talented people around you to win the championship.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you're doing . . . I like the upcoming changes to benefits and how you continue to position the company in the market to succeed. Continue to protect the company culture and never forget it's the people that make the company.

I have been working at NuVasive full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Cool spinal technology. It feels good when you support their philanthropic efforts. Pretty good pay and for the most part good benefits. Events are usually fun. If you're willing to drink the corporate kool-aid then you can go far. Pretty good gym/exercise facilities and workout options. There are a lot of really good people here who are trying their best to make it great despite some of the obstacles.

    Cons

Corporate cult-like mentality. You can either advance in this company or have a good work-life balance, you can't do both. Every department runs so lean in staffing that there's no chance to catch your breath. It's more about doing things quickly than doing them intelligently. Budgets get slashed and you're still expected to just "do more with less". The executive level is way out of touch with the average employee and it's becoming disillusioning. There's definitely a good old boy's club and most of us aren't in it. They finally are implementing a 401k match but it's tiny and pretty obviously a distraction from the other areas of benefits that they're cutting. Lots of the old-timers with a lot of experience in this company are getting burnt out and leaving for greener pastures.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There's a lot of distrust in how you present new company-wide initiatives. If it's designed to save the company money, just say so. We know it is. It's obvious we're all about catering to wall street these days.

I have been working at NuVasive as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

I work with a fantastic group of people and the dynamic I've seen within this group is very rare. Management is very involved in work and even personal life as they constantly plan offsite events with friends and families. They definitely encourage work/life balance and flexibility in hours.

    Cons

No cons at this time. I've only been there for less than a year.

I have been working at NuVasive full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

NuVasive is a great place to work and I actually enjoy coming to work every day. Long hours, and a lot is expected of you but most people who get hired at NuVasive know this (and want this) going into it.
The products are first class and everyone truly cares about what NuVasive has to offer.
There are always fun events and meetings and since the environment is pretty young and active it is easy to get along with everyone.
Very competitive, but again, most people hired know this and want this.
It takes a special type of person to work at NuVasive but if you are willing to work hard, compete with coworkers and ALWAYS be "on", then this is the place for you.

    Cons

Pay is fairly low compared to other companies in the industry and even companies outside the medical industry. Considering how hard everyone works and how many hours we put in, it would be nice to be compensated a little more.
    Benefits are just okay.
No 401K match, as others have said in previous posts.
If pay and benefits are your driving factor when choosing a place to work, you may want to consider somewhere else.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider looking at pay scale and benefits to keep up with the "A" player employees you have hired.
Other than that, keep up the great work.

I have been working at NuVasive full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Fast-paced environment with co-workers who have an inherent trust of one another, lift each other up, are eager to do a good job and all work toward a common goal to better patient lives. Flexible hours, desirable salaries and great benefits. The work is interesting, the people are warm, and the day-to-day is challenging, but very rewarding. Management is hands-on and encourages a work/life balance. Communication from the executives is consistent and transparent. If you are adaptable and enjoy working hard, apply!

    Cons

Training of new employees needs more attention. Although new hires usually come with experience and skill sets, the company has grown so big, so quickly, the amount of information required to conduct day-to-day tasks could be enhanced with more detailed training of new hires.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue the increased communication and transparency, it is very refreshing. Consider forming a team to help with training of new hires in each department. Keep up the great benefits and competitive pay.
