Pros
Great people work at this business. Locally-owned; not a major corporation. The guests that shop there are fun to interact with, and the product they offer is high-quality
Cons
Pay is poo poo, unless you run a store. Alot of bias, and they'll terminate an employee for any misconduct whatsoever. Corporate sits around counting stacks of cash while the basic employee gets paid a laughable wage. This is California; cost of living is a factor
Advice to Senior Management
Cut the greed, and quit the witch-hunts on employees that commit minor infractions. The employees are typically amazing personalities, and such often comes with minor character flaws. Treat them as humans, not gears in the machine.
Pros
has friendly people, good training, good benefits, family owned, made great friends, good attitude towards their guests, cool company parties.
Cons
they have some of the worst managers, that only think about themselves and profit and will circulate sexual rumors or any rumors about people, and corporate will hear about it, they don't do anything because they bring in the money!!
Pros
Overall I enjoyed my fellow co-workers. We always had fun while working. Never a dull moment.
Cons
Don't expect hard work to pay off. Favoritism was the only way to get a promotion. If you were not the manager's friend or favorite you got stuck with the worst shifts and had to ask for pay raises, unlike the favorites.
Upper management loved to treat the employees like children when they would talk to you.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't treat your employees like kids, just talk straight with them.
Take a good look at how you promote people and why, because (at least where I was) there was a lot of favoritism taking place.
Pros
Good company! Very hard to get hired into. Good opportunities for advancement. Upper Management is great. Free smoothies every 2 weeks from manager.
Cons
Supervisors and assistant have no leadership ability. If you decide to work at Nugget, be prepared to bring problem higher than the Supervisor level.
Advice to Senior Management
The Upper Managment at Nugget is great. The problem with leadership at Nugget is at the Supervisor level. Supervisors need to attend a leadership correspondence course to promote.
Pros
By and large, most of your fellow employees are friendly, helpful, work together as a team. The benefits and compensation package is spectacular, far beyond what would be expected for a retail job. Company also have events throughout the year to keep work interesting. The customers this place attracts tends to be more upscale so the work environment stays pretty civilized. For the most part, the products sold are of high quality and pretty much sell themselves. Management can be a great reason to work here, so long as you have managers above you that not only say the company mission statement but believe it and is reflected in their behavior towards their team. The executive team is beyond awesome.
Cons
The only real downside is if you are working with a poor manager. That can and has destroy working relationships, affect customer relations, and create an incredibly hostile work environment. Unfortunately for Nugget Market, while the good managers certainly outnumber the bad, their recent growth spurt has definitely affected the quality of management rising through the ranks and the good ones are being spread too thin.
Advice to Senior Management
Slow it down, and refocus on the kind of working atmosphere you had back in the early 2000s before heading for another expansionist surge. All the employee events and activities don't make up for bad management at the departmental or store level that can destroy employee morale and customer satisfaction.
