Pros – pride in making a good quality product
previously was the UAW Job security-not now
Cons – having to start all over after 20 years of dedicated service all for nothing
Advice to Senior Management – awful that our livelihood was placed in the hands of incompitent managers and now we are all out the door and there is nothing we can do about it.

Pros – Good job security, fast-paced environment, can (usually) always stay busy, neat factory environment, Toyota experience, great immediate supervisor (lucky), a lot of young engineers
Cons – Extremely long lead time to substantial promotion, sub-par compensation, low challenge, office with no windows, lack of communication between departments, management VERY resistant to change, does not encourage higher education, expensive cafeteria with sub-par food, UAW
Advice to Senior Management – Find a way to keep engineers for more than just a few years; the "revolving door" (as quoted by our GM) needs to stop, and management needs to think outside the box on this one.

Pros – Only car plant in California, will probably be shutting down soon since all the lazy union employees are just sitting around exploting the system of senority and barely contributing to a friendly, enjoyable environment for everyone. But I did enjoy getting to learn how toyota works and the insider knowledge that will probably prove to be invaluable to my career. Also, no 2 days are ever the same, it's like be a cop, but you have to solve crimes that pertain to quality.
Cons – Long hours, stress, no management support. Lazy workers doing the minimum to scrape by. No time to take a vacation. Management is either too overcontrolling or just plain swamped and bogged down by unneccessary items that are not really their responsibility, but have no problem handing the issue down to lower ranks and letting them deal with it.
Advice to Senior Management – Be more willing to talk with other managers instead of sending lower level employees to be your puppets. Provide better training and lead by example, not throw someone under the bus and then try to offer help when it is way too late.

Pros – Learning the Toyota Production System. The problem solving structure and tools that come with learning TPS are invaluable and can help anyone stand out when looking for employment elsewhere. You want to learn some solid problem solving skills in a high volume manufacturing setting, this is the place to be. There is a sense and level of team work that is also prevalent throughout the organization which can be good at times. The benefits are probably one of the best things about working at NUMMI. Very little employee contribution for medical coverage which is good. There is also access to purchasing low mileage, NUMMI built vehicles for a very good price .
Cons – There is too much emphasis on production when making decisions. The work hours can be frightening to some, especially if you are looking for some degree of work-life-balance. The hourly, unionized production workforce has problems with coming to work. This always affects the ability to run the production line and quality since many times, they just throw people on the job who may not be fully trained. With all the recent non-production workdays, the hourly work force has the option of coming to work to get paid and do meaningful work. How long can NUMMI survive with this reduced volume and still pay people for coming to work when they are not producing vehicles which make money???
Advice to Senior Management – Get back-to-basics. It seems this is what President Ogura is shooting for. Let's hope its not too little-too late.

Pros – Only Auto industry outside the mid west. good fist job, and excellent co-workers. Lots of opportunity to learn about different manufacturing processes. Good place for a manufacturing engineer.
Cons – Long hours, poor compensation, very poor management. Working for a union organization is VERY frustrating, and tiresome. An engineer is programed to try and solve simple and complex issues, and NUMMI continually blocks the process by treating their engineers as 3rd class, below the line workers and management. Not a place for a MEchanical engineer as the word is completely non-technical and requires only basic engineering knowledge.
Advice to Senior Management – Educate your employees and empower them. Lower management is very self centered, and unaware of their teams abilities and hard work.

Pros – Good pay for the work you do when compared to other companies...No layoffs clause in current contract...secure job...
Cons – Upper management does not know what team members do on the line, yet they control your future in the company if changes are warranted...some team members are a pain to work with...if on-line, job is very monotonous...seniority is the name of the game, not ability or ambition...no more direct hiring-they only hire temps at this time...if you have connections you are ahead of the game
Advice to Senior Management – Take time to talk directly to team members...show up online more often...ask questions and take action on team member concerns...don't only show up when changes are planned- we are not dumb, we know what is going on in the company....

Pros – NUMMI is a good training ground.
Cons – It seems that employees fear of losing their job if they make are human and make a mistake.
Advice to Senior Management – Listen to the employees and be open for feedback. After receiving information, take the importance of the message and try to provide deliverables that could meet the overall needs of the employees.

Pros – Chance to enter a job and work on a global project right out of college & seeing your hard work in the hands of consumers. The chance to learn and use the Toyota Production System. Experience how Toyota manages quality hands on. Good health care and benefits.
Cons – Poor career growth. The employee rating system & promotion system for salaried employees is setup to make you fail. The system makes it possible to never be promoted due to their tier level system & time in grade requirement. You will work hours writing a self review, which will place you into a bell curve dictating your employee rating. There is a handbook they are supposed to rate you with and it is never used. You will get your rating and review the handbook to find that nothing was used from the handbook. There are some Engineering section managers that think they can give poor ratings to everyone since a small portion of their goals were not met even to the individuals who did not have anything to do with not making a partiular goal.
The NUMMI production management is unprofessional using an almost thug attitude bullying and getting in your face to make things their way whether they are right or wrong causing many Team Members to be in fear and yes people. Production will always claim a parts problem when there is an assembly line problem you will investigate and find it to be an assembly related issue and not an enginering parts issue. Bottom line as an engineer you will be thrown under the bus on a regular basis.
Get used to not having your own life. You will be tied to the assembly line as an engineer and if there is a problem you will stay there. You will get overtime for a work day over 8 hours, but you will be tired from working overtime everyday a usual day is 11 hours or more for most Engineers. They claim you are salaried, but then when you need leave less than 8 hours your boss will question you and give you them impression it is not allowed. You will not be asked to work holidays and weekends you will be TOLD you must work the weekend and holliday. You will give up your personal life to work at NUMMI.
Advice to Senior Management – Look at the employee morale...the turn over is high...

I have been working at Nummi
Pros – Great for starters or those looking for experience with manufacturing or production environments.
Cons – Structure for promotion / advancement is horrible at best. Team members to management, don't support change, not even for clear improvements to quality / cost. The smallest things are made difficult and stressful. In order to survive, you have to learn not to care...shame...
Advice to Senior Management – Please recognize, appreciate, and support the Specialists and work on improving the promotion process to reflect actual capability, knowledge, and potential instead of pre-estabilished & limited time in grade levels and years of service...
