Great mission, but ironically poor accountability for ethical behavior.

I worked at Nyack College (more than 5 years)

    Pros

This is a great institution to work for to build up students who want to grow academically in a Christian environment. The mission of this college is inspiring and uplifting.

    Cons

The admissions process for students and hiring process for new employees does not always take into account their character and well-being. There have been concerns that some students and some employees are not assessed psychologically and can therefore be a risk or concern for misconduct or harrassment (including sexual). Adherence to biblical lifestyle is not always enforced.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please have all students and staff take psychological assessments to make sure they are stable people and will not pose a risk to the institution. Please do not wait for something embarrassing to happen where people can get hurt by not setting a higher standard for qualified students and staff.

    Pros

The students are wonderful. Work is very fulfilling.

    Cons

Leadership seems to have forgotten the school's founding purpose of educating students, and are more focused on making money. All organizations need to focus on their financial condition, but not at the expense of damage to the core product.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve financial condition by increasing retention rates, which means providing needed support services. Increase enrollment and improve brand image by providing education that adequately prepares graduates.

    Pros

Working at Nyack College was a blast. The coworkers are like family, they genuinely care about one another. It is truly a Christian environment if there ever was one. Good work-life balance.

    Cons

Nyack College is moving into a direction of trying to become "bigger and better" as a result, making very reactive decisions that are not wise. It feels like the leadership [executive and trustees] who are calling the shots are clueless on what is happening on the ground.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would encourage the management and leadership to spend some more time developing systems, training staff than just trying to "save face" to the trustees. You're winning the battle and losing the war.

I have been working at Nyack College

    Pros

As an organization with Christian principles, Nyack College offers an extremely warm work enviroment. As soon as you step onto it campus, you know that you will be greeting by smiles, genuine greetings, and a supportive environment. Peace abounds.

    Cons

The downside to Nyack College is that it tends to be too nonconfrontational. At times, for example, supervisors may not want to provide honest feedback due to concerns with hurting the employees feelings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The leadership of Nyack College may want to consider offering management training in constructive criticism, conducting employment reviews, and managing staff.
