Pros
Great portfolio of businesses; very supportive of young talent and look to grow and develop skills. Great for people out of college or at any point in their career.
Cons
Some of the businesses can feel silo-ed which isn't the worst because you get to focus on your team and business.
Advice to Senior Management
Give more money to young talent out of college to be competitive against other big companies. Underpaying and overworking young talent is not acceptable.
Pros
pay and benefits are good
Cons
union is entrenched and limits management effectiveness
Advice to Senior Management
back employees
Pros
Creativity-inspiring facilities
Solid people at certain levels of the organization
Desire to win (although their industrial sector is forever tied to housing's whims)
Cons
Over-the-top moralistic. Every word said by everyone is put under the microscope
Too much behind-the-back chatter about everyone and not enough open-and-honest engagement
Resources are constrained, though business goals over-reaching (hence fundamentally flawed)
Dominating dismissiveness to the not-invented-here mind set
Near zero ethnic diversity - and programs initiated are mostly sugar-coated to satisfy perception rather than create tangible change.
Advice to Senior Management
Change the fundamentals of the culture to allow for respectful engagement by employees with employees without escalating for every minor item.
Be realistic of the conditions of the industry and invest well in enabling a more agile culture that embraces differences and change.
Pros
Good quality products, but over priced.
Cons
A management culture that is best defined as "spineless" - you bring them solutions to problems you are experiencing in the field, and it goes NOWHERE. You'll find that the people who work at corporate have this air of superiority and ARROGANCE which summarizes and adds to the overall dysfunction of this company. The ones who survive with this group are soulless individuals who's main personality trait is only looking out for number one... so watch your back. If you decide to sell for this outfit, I can promise you that you'll think back to this post after 6 months.
Advice to Senior Management
Lose the arrogance, and react to the damage that is being created by your internal staff. The last time I looked you were losing some very talented individuals by the droves, and there are reasons they are leaving. Redefine the word "leadership"....this should not include anything remotely resembling a good ol' boy network.
Pros
Working within the manufacturing facilities, you were allowed to voice your opinion and drive change. In addition, you were allowed to take on as much responsibility as you determined. The organization was focused on waste elimination based on continuous manufacturing of a product well into it's product cycle.
Cons
To advance within Owens Corning requires relocation. After a while, moving becomes a problem if your spouse is employed or children are in school. Senior level Management is hired from outside the organization and many do not have a foundation of the products, processes, or personnel. Without this foundations, several bad decisions are made.
Advice to Senior Management
Promote and develop from within. Outside managers tend to bring in initiatives that realize immediate gains. Sometimes those actions may leave a large liability, especially after the new manager has been promoted or bounced to another organization.
Pros
The senior leadership are all very accessible and visible to all employees. It is very obvious how much the company cares about safety.
Cons
Based out of Toledo. Very little to do in downtown Toledo other than going to the AAA Mudhens baseball games.
Advice to Senior Management
You do a great job of running the internship program however it reflects poorly to have such a large disparity between intern salaries.
Pros
World headquarters is an amazing building! Everyon is in at 8 AM and gone by 5 PM. People are generally very friendly and the pay is good. Lots of opportunity for growth on a professional skills level.
Cons
Very political. Promotions and moves within the company do not have the appearance of talent driven. If you speak your mind, keep your eye in the rear view mirror. This corporation is not different than any other corporation; when they ask for your oppinion, not sure if they really want it.
Advice to Senior Management
If you want honesty, be prepared to hear it. Companies do not grow from going with the flow. A lot to offer, just better suited in the field vs. a political corporate office.
Pros
Work for a company that makes things that make the world better. The company has a strong global brand and high product quality. The leadership team is global and is accessible.
Cons
The industries OC serves are becoming increasingly competitive.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue to grow the company by investing in innovations.
Pros
- Good hourly pay
- Fair yearly evaluations
- Scheduling is fairly relaxed, as long as you provide coverage for your shift you can take plenty of time off.
Cons
- Employees are treated fairly, but some are treated more fairly than others. Great opportunities are given to employees who cuddle up to management, such as being able to go to school while on the clock. Other employees are not even allowed to lock onto a night shift so they can try and attend classes on their own time. A lot of the management and front office positions are filled by people who lack experience. Management claims to have a hands-off approach but are prone to white knighting on shifts when they think there are issues, even if the shift itself doesn't agree.
Advice to Senior Management
Let your shifts do what you claim in the plant orientation and run themselves. Be less concerns with the personal lives of your employees, whether you like them or not and more concerned with who is actually doing high quality work.
Pros
Great environment, beautiful campus, great amenities. Good people and overall positive envrionment.
Cons
Too large. So much time is wasted trying to find information to get things done - but they are working on this issue.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep on truckin'
