    Great mission, great people

    Senior Director (Current Employee)
    Portland, OR

ProsOHSU has a fantastic mission and contributes directly to the overall health and well being of others. The people are fantastic and passionate about their work. I feel that I can do great work here.

ConsCulturally OHSU has a hard time enforcing standards and best practices. Sometimes this is needed in order to make improvements and move to the next level of maturity. Our entrepreneurial culture can be at odds with this goal and results in some maverick process and behavior that isn't addressed.

Advice to Senior ManagementStand together as a leadership team and trust each other. There seems to be a lot of political infighting that can undermine progress.

    A great learning experience

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsA good company that provides steady employment with higher than average salaries.

ConsA lot of politics and bureaucracy which makes change difficult. There is not a lot of professional growth within the academic institutions.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your employees as they are in the trenches and have keen insight and knowledge into the processes that work/don't work and what the customer's need and/or are lacking.

ProsHigh quality clinical work in a collegial setting. Beautiful small city that is easy to get arou nd, much like a small town. Spectacular lifestyle, but must not mind gray skies and drizzle! The relationship between clinical departments is wonderful. If you are very motivated you can go far. OHSU is a home for academic underachievers among medical schools. You can advance very far by publishing and pushing yourself a bit.

ConsLimitations in salary compared with other positions in other universities. This must be weighed against overall considerations of lifestyle. The city has much to enjoy. Your commute will not be difficult, generally. the occasional icy roads can be a bit treacherous. On a clear day there is no more beautiful place, but clear days are in the minority! The university is, like many state run institutions, subject to state budget cuts and loss of federal support. Most often, funding is at least adequate, however.

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove the parking situation! Improved salaries would be extremely helpful.

ProsMany good seminars, big research community especially in neuroscience. Decent free health plan and 70% off from yearly transit pass.

ConsLibrary is quite lacking. A lot of electronic journals are not fully available.

    Advice to Senior ManagementImprove library.

Good benefits, many opportunities, lot of exciting work.

    Research Associate (Current Employee)
    Portland, OR

ProsCutting edge research and medical care. Also houses schools of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and ophthalmology. For a large organization it's pretty well-run. Quick hiring process. They have an excellent reputation throughout the state. The benefits, for now, are generous. Good workforce development commitment.

ConsPay is not competitive. Research doesn't compensate for prior years of professional experience.
Battles with union contracts at the same time that the top six executives received over $600,000 dollars in annual bonuses, and the organization was trumpeting their most profitable year ever.

Advice to Senior ManagementClearer communication as to why cuts in benefits to employees happen concurrently with large Allow opportunities for advancement in a more systematic way.
