  1. Pleasant place to work, but parking is horrible on the hill.

    Pros

This varies widely depending on where you work and what capacity you work in within the hospital. I worked in research and enjoyed it. Fortunately I worked with great people. Also, I enjoyed the food options there and the campus is beautiful during the warmer months.

    Cons

Unless you are there 5+ years, good luck getting a parking pass. If you drive, want to park at work and are relatively new there you will need to fork $10 a day to park on the hill. I spent a fortune working there for a year. Charging employees the same high rate as anyone else is very unfortunate.

    Advice to Management

Make parking more realistic for employees who do not want to take the bus.

    Pros

Very complex work environment, which makes learning more interesting than at a smaller healthcare organization; wonderful people; very smart senior leaders; positive work environment

    Cons

A lot of information does not trickle down to lower level employees or front line staff--senior leaders need to be more transparent and visible; parking is expensive, IF you can get a spot on the hill at all!

I have been working at OHSU full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

3 weeks paid vacation, really good benefits overall (20 days/year of sick time, matched 401K, disability and maternity leave, and Aetna health insurance with decent PPO plan, dental & vision)

    Cons

Parking is terrible! As an employee you can be put on a waiting list to get to park in a parking lot which is about 2-3 years (and then you still have to paid about $100 a month or more depending on where the lot is located). Otherwise you can park on the street which is 2hr parking and they patrol/ticket constantly.

I have been working at OHSU full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great PIs, access to government funded research materials, primate center, great networking opportunities, knowledge that you are contributing to actual medicine (not big pharma)

    Cons

Not as much pay as capitalist research, employment more dependent on grants/funds, sometimes certain PIs could be very grating; otherwise, it's really difficult to say anything negative. Favorite job I've had.

    Advice to Management

None--they are amazing. Maybe more opportunities for smaller projects.

I have been working at OHSU full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

~Great staff and atmosphere  ~Monumentally beneficial research succeeding with top investigators ~Interesting presentations and lectures that employees are encouraged to attend ~Great benefits, lots of vacation/sick time,  ~Implements "carrot not stick" approach to health- offering discounted insurance rate and cash to participate in healthy behavior like company paid Weight Watchers or logging workouts ~Approachable upper management ~Social events held for employees promotes strong community  ~Progressive company- equal rights for same sex marriages/partnerships

    Cons

~Academic research does not pay well (unless you are running the lab- sometimes)  ~Necessary use of animal models for research

    Advice to Management

Great job- keep listening to your employees and encouraging the positive atmosphere. Could use a bit more variety of on campus food options/ competition.
