I worked at OHSU as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

I had the opportunity to see cardiopulmonary disease states I might have otherwise only read about. The staff was excellent to work with and readily shared their wealth of knowledge. Working in the CF clinic and NICU were highlights of my educational experience.

    Cons

Parking can be expensive. Not a big deal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would like to thank them for the experience. A longer rotation there would have been even better.

~Implements "carrot not stick" approach to health- offering discounted insurance rate and cash to participate in healthy behavior like company paid Weight Watchers or logging workouts
    ~Approachable upper management
~Social events held for employees promotes strong community
~Progressive company- equal rights for same sex marriages/partnerships

Current Employee - Lab Assistant in Beaverton, OR

I have been working at OHSU full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great PIs, access to government funded research materials, primate center, great networking opportunities, knowledge that you are contributing to actual medicine (not big pharma)

    Cons

Not as much pay as capitalist research, employment more dependent on grants/funds, sometimes certain PIs could be very grating; otherwise, it's really difficult to say anything negative. Favorite job I've had.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None--they are amazing. Maybe more opportunities for smaller projects.
