I worked at ON Semiconductor full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Nice town to work in

    Cons

No change to move up, stale team members, no one ever moves on and chance for advancement in a small town in 0

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do your homework, allow advancement withing the ranks.

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Opportunity for movement and growth around the company (ie will allow to transfer easily between departments). Will look good on a resume as it is a large international company. Lets you work from home as often as you want, flex schedule

    Cons

Forced time off, negative vacation! Hire horrible, inexperienced managers. Very political environment with lots of office drama.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do better research on your new hires. Get rid of the old workers who are eating up the payroll and maybe we wouldn't have to take so much forced time off. And do something nice for your employees!

    Pros

It's better than not working. Many good people at the company. You can hide out forever, if you keep your head down.

    Cons

Management is very "Motorola" centric. If you're from Moto, you do okay at ON. Otherwise, you are treated like a conquered country. Nobody tells the truth. At the monthly reviews, almost all projects are reported as on time, when most of them are slipping hugely. If you dare to tell the truth, you are shown the door.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop shooting the messenger. Reward people who are brave enough to speak the truth, regardless of how painful it is. You cannot make good business decisions with bad data.

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

If you're a Romanian from the Catalyst Acquisition, you're somewhat protected. Incompetence and socially unacceptable behavior are tolerated, even rewarded it seems. On the other hand, if you're from the old Moto clan, you've got a place in Phoenix.

    Cons

If you're not a Romanian and you get the pleasure to interface with those people... let's just say it's an experience... but if you're not located in Phoenix, forget about advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't buy a small company to grab the cash in the bank if it's run by idiots that protect "their own" and hire all of their relatives back in the motherland! Do the shareholders a favor and invest in something with some real IP, not a nepotistic jelly-bean commodity house.

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

High paying, especially for the area.

    Cons

Known for laying people off. Engineers are over worked and expected to perform many more roles and handle much more product than at other semiconductor companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't expect engineers to do the job of 3 people and still expect them to stay with the company.

I worked at ON Semiconductor full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Better pay and benefits than other industries.

    Cons

Suffers the same problems that all semiconductor manufacturing companies do. The work is repetitive, unrewarding, and unstimulating. It's impossible to make changes, no matter how good they look, and it's difficult to learn things because no one knows the answers to a lot of questions and you can't do experiments to figure them out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Unshackle your engineers.

I have been working at ON Semiconductor

    Pros

Coworkers are enjoyable to work with; global company so able to gain insight and cross cultural competence; multiple acquisitions in short span of time.

    Cons

No opportunities to grow within the company; no promotion from within; low employee morale; cost cutting has deeply affected employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more flexibility to employees; disburse work out evenly; provide more feedback and training; offer more lunch and learns to improve skill sets

I have been working at ON Semiconductor

    Pros

    Relaxed atmosphere.
Co-workers are likely to help you on question, issues.
All levels of local management can be personally contacted.

    Cons

    No significant raises/bonuses for employees.
Employees take pay cuts when economy is down, management takes raises/bonuses/benefits when economy is good.
Middle management is not locally based, and communication with then is often poor to very poor.
Promotion is not based on skills, but on personal relationships

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leadership seems to be disconnected with employees and don't have a clue what is happening on the workplace. Criticism is frowned upon.

    I worked at ON Semiconductor

    Pros

    -Great place to build resume
    -Good salary, decent benefits
    -Knowledgeable coworkers and staff
-Opportunities to act in several managerial and analyst roles
-Gave me a decent severance package after laying me off, even though my tenure was only 5 months

    Cons

-Absolutely no job security, no tenure is safe
    -Layoffs are very frequent
-Almost every new hire I met quit after a few months
    -Low morale, somewhat depressing atmosphere
-Constant griping and complaining behind managers' backs, especially from engineers
-Bureaucracy is pretty rampant, especially with frequent organizational shakeups
-Rivalry within parts of the company, especially due to cultural differences
-Strong push to offshore analyst and manager positions to Shenzhen, including the one I held.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more lean with hiring workforces, don't hire and layoff in such a short cycle. Focus on making a less mercenary work culture.

    I worked at ON Semiconductor

    Pros

Many of the people in various departments and business units are well intentioned and work well together.

    Cons

Procurement department management drives away staff and insults vendors. Teaming with internal customers is strongly discouraged. And HR doesn't seem to care.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean house in the Procurement department's management. ON should function as a team, and it hasn't been for awhile now.
