I worked at OOCL (Less than a year)

    Pros

With my two years in OOCL being software developer, OOCL is a good but old company. Average salary, stable promotion and a good training program for junior fresh graduate employees. I think I gained a good knowledge about how to be a good teammate and benefited from the program.

    Cons

It's not so aggressive as other IT company, which is in common with other IT department of other companies.

    Advice to Management

I love their management. Simple organization heirarchy, care about the employee.

    I worked at OOCL full-time

    Pros

People are generally nice and helpful. Good benefits. Work is simple and generally uncomplicated.

    Cons

Do not work here if you have any aspirations of climbing the ladder in a state other than Utah. Hong Kong-based management recently restructured and you will be pushed to move to new Salt Lake City HQ if you want promotions. Work is extremely boring and multiple layers of bureaucracy make it impossible to get things done quickly. Container shipping has become a commoditized industry and employees are treated as such.

    Advice to Management

Office Managers: Focus more on performance and customer satisfaction than menial policies like headphones or downtime at work. Try to show new employees a path to success that doesnt involve becoming a manager because you've worked in your dept the longest. OOCL Execs: Closing offices in NYC, CHI, HOU and San Ramon to consolidate in Salt Lake City was short-sighted and motivated soley by tax incentives. You lost a lot of the people that helped OOCL differentiate itself from other carriers with that move and expecting to replace them with brand new employees with zero experience shows the belief that employees are interchangeable and can be replaced without any change is product or service. As a result many managers are inexperienced and incapable of managing diverse groups with multiple perspectives. Without serious innovations, OOCL will continue to lose marketshare as it cannot compete with larger competitors in a low-cost, commoditized industry.

    Pros

Job stability, many people work for 10+ or even 25yrs Team spirit is high as product cycles is long and less politics Good place to work for relatively junior staff as company culture is not afraid to give opportunity to junior, eager to learn individuals Offer decent benefits but definitely not the best perks

    Cons
