    ORC is a laid back firm but focused on doing great work.

    The small size sometimes gets in the way of staffing projects ORC can do.

    Pros

    -Flexible hours and location (work from home)
    -Intelligent colleagues (for the most part)
    -Small business/non-profit org feel (feel like you are making a difference on the org and on the project/client; you know everyone at the office; lots of interaction with and access to executives and senior consultants;
    -Friendly, collegial atmosphere
    -You have a lot of say over what your role is (what you want to get involved with, etc.)

    Cons

    -Poor infrastructure: IT dept is incompetent, don't have tools/software to do job efficiently and effectively (so you spend a lot of time on things you shouldn't have to); don't have appropriate knowledge/info capture so there is a lot of reinventing the wheel
    -Not enough admin support
    -Roles are not clearly defined. Seems like there are unnecessary jobs/positions
    -Small company so not a lot of opportunities for career advancement (although if you seek it out, there are plenty of people to learn from)
    -Compensation for non-senior roles is very poor
    -Zero communication/transparency from the top
    -Leadership team can't seem to decide on anything so it takes awhile for any org change to happen (if it ever happens)
    -Policies and procedures are undefined or just nonexistent
    -Performance management is a joke
    -Seems like leadership never follows through on anything

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Communicate more often. Better define roles, policies, standards, etc. Make decisions about investments and then follow through on them. At least appear like you are a united front, even if you differ in opinion on both small and large org issues.

    Pros

    People tend to know each other. Family feel, reasonably informal culture. Easy to gain access to anyone in the company including senior management.

    Cons

    Tend to have fewer systems and processes, meaning more time is spent doing administrative work and "reinventing the wheel" for different projects.

    A friendly and collegial atmosphere across the organization
    Some decent benefits
    Some good managers
    Flexible work arrangements
    Opportunities to work on a variety of projects

    Cons

    Poor pay
    Favoritism
    Poor executive leadership
    Indifference towards general staff
    Unprofessional and borderline incompetent support staff
    Very little passion for work-life balance

    ORC needs to care more about it's general staff. There is a definitely feeling that the organization is completely indifferent.

    Pros

    Decent vacation time
    Decent benefits
    When client visits were required, business travel accommodations and allowances were fairly generous

    Cons

    poor management
    uncompetitive pay
    lack of communication and transparency between management and employees
    does not think of client interest
    no recognition of hard work
    favoritism
    laughable support staff
    immense amount of turn over of decent employees
