Outback used to be a good company to work for...

    Food Server (Current Employee)
    Baltimore, MD

ProsYou don't work during the day. They are only open at night (4-5 weekdays) and then open in the afternoons Sat/Sun. People freak out about coming to Outback so people feel they are coming into a restaurant that is special and it's a special occasion. That is its blessing and curse.

ConsIt's a corporate environment so they will no matter what side with the guest and give them what they want. We have some very undesirable customers who believe it's fun to come in and act ignorant, run you to death then complain to management so they can get stuff free. Then they leave you NO TIP. Just to shut people up and get them out the door the managers give away the whole restaurant to them and sent them on their way.

Advice to Senior ManagementStand up for your servers!! Take a stand and don't give in to all of the ridiculous demands of our clientele. Please have some schedule flexibility and don't have your server scrounging around trying to get a shift covered.

Decent restaurant job for the college goer.

    Server (Current Employee)
    Oklahoma City, OK

ProsGreat place to put yourself through college.
Can make decent money. The average ppa is about $11. It is not hard to make 60+ dollars per shift. The pay is 2.13/hr, and very few servers make more than that. The atmosphere is fun, and the people that work here are great. The management team will work around your schedule most of the time. They provide adequate work/life balance. If you show up, and work hard, you will be recognized.

ConsUsually too many servers scheduled; this means little money on nights that are expected to be slow. Management can make you wonder sometimes. Consistency is low.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more proactive. Spend money to make money. Set employees up for success.

    Flexible and fun

    Staff Accountant (Current Employee)
    Tampa, FL

ProsThe flexibility in hours is a great benefit to working at OSI. If you need to take an hour off to go to a doctor's appointment or go see your kid in school, they will let you. Their comittment to having a balance between work and personal life is one of the best things about working for OSI restaurant partners. I also like the relaxed dress code. I can't complain about being able to wear jeans every day of the week. They also support a fun atmosphere to work in and team building is key. They are also committed to doing good for the community.

ConsPay and benefits are lacking. The company does not contribute to 401ks. Also there is a lack of job growth in the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementHonestly in these economic times, I am happy to have my job. They have cut back on financial items but I still have my job so I am happy about that.

    Outback good and bad

    Server (Current Employee)
    Rock Hill, SC

ProsIt is flexible with work schedules and you can make alot of money in a short time. The new hotschedule systems also enhances the flexibility of scheduling. Some middle management have good attitudes towards staff, but seniority takes place. The atmosphere of the restaurant is exceptional, the boss is more concerned with getting your personality accross than the detailed components of services that are oulined in the secret shop event. This does create of since of community and humanness, because striving to attain all service standards does become redundant and almost robot like. The boss is definatley approachable and easy to talk to, along with middle managment, but sometimes employees are ignored.

ConsThe tipshare system, the seniority of management with pompus key employees, head wait, and middle managment. The attitude of a promoted head wait can ultimately affect the timilines of you getting out on time. In short, if head wait does not like you, then your bag will be last. So you almost have to be extremely nice to these canadates. In addition, if you do request only a couple of days for school, you are seen as a filler, no matter how long you worked with the company and be schedule horrible closing shifts and 5.15 shifts. This does not include everyone. Also racism is prevalent.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep doing what you are doing as far as food quality and consistency. Upgrade your current employee feedback, because it is not a good system. Furthermore, when taking the employee survey management says if you rate it poorly then we will have to have another meeting, so most gave a favorable postion with its managers.

    Outback

    Customer Service (Current Employee)

ProsI had a fantastic boss, great discount, and it was flexible with school. There is also good profit sharing (in the form of a holiday bonus) if you worked enough hours (the standard isn't hard to meet) you got a bonus.

ConsThe shifts were unreliable. I never knew what time I was going to get off work. The tip sharing system was awful because on busy nights where you had to work the hardest, more people were on the clock so you made less than you did on slow nights. he company suffered from over-hiring and very few people had enough hours.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe patient with your employees and fire those who are not food with customer service.

    Great place to work!

    Waitress (Former Employee)
    Fort Lauderdale, FL

ProsGreat place to work because of the people, company, coworkers, and money.

ConsCustomers and occasional lower-management problems. The day-to-day managers at some of the stores kind of went on some obnoxious power trips. I guess that could be considered just an individual personality flaw, and not a reflection of the company itself. Wherever you go you are going to run into annoying managers who think that they are way more important than they really are. Same with customers. Outback is somewhat of a higher-end restaraunt, so sometimes customers could get "snooty".

    A company run by idiots

    Server (Current Employee)

ProsThey are flexiable with their scheduling.

ConsMost of the management could not run a hot dog stand much less a restaurant. Advancement based on your friendship with management. They are extremely uncoordinated and have no common ground with employees. They continually over look employees for customers and see most employees as expendable. They view most servers as numbers rather then people.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry serving tables for a day and see what its really like.
