I worked at OTTO full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The environment on the production floor is very friendly. People are usually helpfull and understanding. Benefits are pretty good.

    Cons

Sometimes it's hard to get things done. When I was there the management pushed their work on the people under them too much.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train better and help people more. Just be more proactive and communicative. Listen to your people and react the right way.

    Pros

Small, family owned company which has an entrepreneurial spirit. You can manage the success of your job with ideas and recommendations.

    Cons

Because it is a smaller company, resources sometimes are limited and you tend to wear many hats. Need to be an individual that thrives on multi-tasking and who does not mind helping do all aspects of a job from beginning to end.

    Cons

This company is ran by fear management, threats and the quality of leadership below the owners are horrible!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at OTTO full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

It's a big international company with multicultural environment. It’s nice to work here. The working atmosphere is mostly positive and not stressful. You can find interesting projects to work on here.

    Cons

Most of business processes are not structured that means less bureaucracy but on the other hand it can be hard for newcomers even to find out whom they can address their requests and even to define their job responsibilities. The salary level is not the highest on the market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To consider their employees as valuable assets.

I have been working at OTTO

    Pros

There is too much work. Each engineer has approximately 5-6 projects out of which 3 of them are super HOT!!! It is good thing compare to current economy. Pays is OK. Company has lots of potential for the future.

    Cons

Upper management is keep hiring PM instead of engineers who can do the work. Not enough vacation days. Doesn't promote from within too often.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We don't need more paper pusher, we need more hands to get things done.

    Pros

OTTO is a very caring, socially responsible company based in Germany that really does live by the "don't be evil" mantra. They go far out of their way to avoid layoffs and other cut throat business practices... even though these are sometimes necessary. Good and smart colleagues who are trying to make a contribution in the midst of massive change. They are currently experiencing a lot of change as the realities of today's multi-channel retail approaches threaten OTTO's traditional way of running their business. New competitors are emerging every year and they're starting to eat their lunch. To OTTO's credit they are trying to change, but change is coming too slow and it's not aggressive enough.

    Cons

Too much time spent trying to make everyone happy. This just results in a lot of confusion and a lot of starting out in one direction then switching to another. Many of the decisions seem arbitrary and contrary to sound business practices. There's also a layer of "strategic thinkers" that just muddy the waters. Most of them don't have real operational experience so they operate in a vacuum and produce guidance and direction that usually doesn't have a prayer of being realized. For at least the next couple years career opportunities will be limited.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend less time planning and more time doing. Don't be afraid to make difficult decisions. Start small, engage in pilot projects, gain momentum and build on it.

    Negative Outlook
