I worked at Oakland Community College full-time for more than a year

    Pros

It would be a good place for employment because it is a very loving environment and everyone is treated like family.

    Cons

I honestly can not think of anything bad to say about being an employee at Oakland Community College.

    The Classroom Equals the Students

I worked at Oakland Community College

    Pros

For the most part, the students were responsive and respectful. However, the primary attitude was that paying for credit hours meant passing the course.
There was little interference with the autonomy of the instructor.
Being an adjunct meant being outside of the culture of the institution.

    Cons

The hourly pay was exceedingly low, and there was very little contact between the adjuncts and the full-time faculty.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your adjuncts with the respect that a professional teacher deserves.

I worked at Oakland Community College

    Pros

The students are excellent-- diverse, bright, eager and willing to share. There is a reasonable amount of academic freedom. Very talented and considerate department heads.

    Cons

Difficult to advance. Adjuncts treated like punch clock employees. Zero pay for performance. Continuing education courses required to advance pay grades lack depth, merit and relevance, such as "appearances matter" when the presenter is wearing a bag dress, fuzzy socks and sandals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay adjuncts what they are worth. Talk to students. Objectively consider what the students submit to Rate My Professor.

I worked at Oakland Community College as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

The freedom to work at your on pace while being responsible for my area was rewarding. Being able to have my work stand on its on was very satisfing to me.

    Cons

Being a temporary employee had its downside. Working along side much higher paid co-workers as their helper at time was hard knowing I was doing the work they were getting paid to do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to employeessuggestions on the front line makes for a better work enviroment for all.

I have been working at Oakland Community College full-time

    Pros

Great benefits, enjoy working with my coworkers, and I can take classes at OCC for free!

    Cons

Positions that open up are either top positions (Dean) or the lowest positions (part time or level 1). Positions in the college are top heavy. The people in the top positions don't seem very interested in the day to day operations within the departments. Money is often spent unwisely.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees more. They are on the front lines and know what is going on more than you do.

I have been working at Oakland Community College part-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Excellent pay, Lots of time off, Interesting work, Great students and colleagues

    Cons

Lots of changes going on right now. While I admire administration for wanting to update the college, they are making too many changes at once and being secretive about it.
Some campuses and departments are great with responsive employees who do their job. Other campuses require lots of paperwork and e-mails to multiple people for simple things (getting basic office equipment repaired) which is never responded to after months of following up. Lots of "this for that" backscratching required to get things done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better to make one good change per year for 5 years, than multiple changes all at the same time. Ask your employees what changes should be made rather than hiring costly consultants. Promote long-time adjuncts rather than hiring from the outside. Working for years for no benefits is a major skill set and shows dedication to the institution. Hiring from the outside looks good on paper, but studies show it takes an outsider 2 years to be fully trained.

    Cons
