Large company functioning like a small business

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsOakley is an innovative eyewear company. A lot of employees have been at Oakley for a very long time.

ConsSystems were very antiquated. Due to the companies location in Southern California, it was really tough to recruit great talent.

    Upbeat vibe

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsVery cool work environment, upbeat with a progressive vibe. They provide a generous clothing allowance for Oakley attire so all employee's are able to wear and represent Oakley. Great styles for men in both Sunglasses, Sports performance and active clothing.

ConsThere tends to be a disconnect from upper management and the floor staff.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe open to the suggestions from the floor associates, seek out their opinions create open forums as a way to engage the staff and mid management they are your front line and work with the customer, they have great insight into what the clients are looking for, most especially your female consumer... you might be surprised.

An innovative company in the past now mired in corporate politics, indecision and lack of clear responsibilities.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat eyewear products. Young team is smart and dedicated, but is kept down by upper management that is just cruising to retirement.

ConsCompletely silo-ed decision making. Very little cooperation between different business divisions and also IT. The result are myopic and partial decisions, double work, lack of a consistent strategy and clear decision making authority. Everything is "group think".

Advice to Senior ManagementRemember that you are paid to make timely decisions. Break down the barriers between divisions. In regards to your Apparel, Footwear and Accessories business: play to win. Right now it is teetering between a legitimate strategic line of business and a bust.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Inexperienced Corporate Management with High-turnover at the Tactical Level

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

Pros- Employee discount (stock up while you're in)
    - Free beer (pbr, anyone?)
    - All day meetings/offsites that make it seem like you're working, but really aren't (seriously though)

ConsPoor Oakley. Great products, but a confused brand with an even more lost and confused corporate team.

Oakley seems to be very top heavy in the management/leadership department. However, those in leadership are not humble enough to realize that they can't do the work alone (or at all in some aspects). They need talented, hard working individuals, and they need to value and appreciate those people when they actually have them. Oakley uses high employee discounts, free beer and the occasional slip-in-slide to engage employees and hope that they don't realize that they are getting no development, no promotion and little to no raise.

If you're looking to develop a career, find a mentor and/or further yourself professionally with any sort of positive promotional outlook, Oakley may not be for you. If you like drama, wondering if you're on the chopping block constantly or working for ungrateful management - go for it.

Advice to Senior ManagementAt the end of the day, it's leadership that develops the vision and the people that actually bring it to life. Oakley needs to humble itself and realize this.

    Great Brand, Poor Leadership

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

Prosgreat brand and heritage, can be a fun environment, good employee discount, benefits are decent, opportunity for travel, good work/life balance, fun parties

ConsLeadership is not focused on driving the business and does not have enough talented, forward thinking people in place. If there is a challenge, instead of trying to solve for it, the focus instead is put on the person who presented it and why they brought it up. So many talented co-workers left to find more rewarding positions in the past 2 years

Advice to Senior ManagementSet a strategy, create a roadmap, share the vision, and drive toward it. Communicate the business plan-let all employees know how they can contribute. Share business results regularly. Reward high achievers. Set great examples by your personal conduct and values. Hold top leadership accountable. Maintain transparency.
